Fall of the Dollar.
[To The Editor of Hongkong Telegraph.].
Sir, I should not Lave thought it possible that so many editorial and interviews with, anonymou "authorities" could have exhibited such a complete lack of comprehen- sion of fundamental facts as has come to light on this subject:""

TREAT FOR SUNDAY SCHOO
MEMBERS.
Од
Happiness reigned at the Union Church Sunday School. ""room Saturday afternoon, when the members of the Sunday School wore. entertained, to a New Year's party by the teachers and others. It was also intended that the function should serve as a farewell party to the scholars who will shortly be leaving the Colony, and as several affair parents were present, the proved a great success from all points of view..
One authority, who granted a long interview, implied that if the Hongkong dollar had been fixed at about 2/-, we should, by our geographic position, have had a sentimental effect on Shanghai and prevented the drop in allver. It is hardly necessary to dwell upon the absurdity of such a view. Most of the commentators seem obsesaod with the idea that if it were not for some imaginary conspiracy, we in Hongkong would really be basic ing in prosperity, with a 2/- dollar, and surveying with aloofness the fate of China's silver currency. One of their complaints is that the banks should never have put us back on a silver basis,

The school hall was' decorated. with gay lighting effects by Trivate Barber, R.A.M.C., and after a series of games, tea was enjoyed, during which musical selections were rendered by a band composed of Cpl. Buggie, IL.A.M.C., Private Barber and L/C. Lorkins, R.A.S.C. The chief attraction, however, was the Jack-in-the-box, cleverly per- sonified by Pte. Barber, who caused much ⚫ amusement among the children as he presented each with a small gift. A bran fub proved another remunerative "Investment," and helped to make the treat one of the most successful entertain- ments in the history of the school:
Their arguments and comments overlook the fact that this Colony has always been on a silver basis. The success of the function was Our Hongkong dollar. la a silver duc in no small measure to the dollar, and our banknotes promise excellent organisation and supervi to pay only silver dollars. efficiency by Mr. H. J. Burnett.
Every reliable currency, is back- ed either by gold or silver. Qura in based on silver, and we cannot blink our eyes to the fact. Any at- tempt to evade this and maintain our dollar at an artificial lovel can only bring into play an additional element of uncertainty to hamper our trade still more. It is bad enough to contend with the vagaries of silver, without introd- ucing a further speculative factor in having a fluctuating premium on notes which bears no relation to their silver backing.
