By the application of special varnishes to plain or coloured glass, articles of great, beauty are produced. Fruit dishes, powder boxes, window plaques, lamp- shades, dressing table sots, flower bowls, dessert services-all these and many other faney and useful article of the home may be made much more beautiful without much trouble.

Before painting, the glass must be thoroughly washed, and, after

it has dried, it must be rubbed methylated spirit.

The design should then be outlined with thin ink, and afterwards coloured with trans- parent varnishes with a small, soft brush. It is not advisable to attempt much shading. If the colours appear streaky, the brush must be quickly dipped into a medium which will soften the varnish before it has time to dry.

In order to make the colours more permanent, a coating of special transparem varnish should be applied to the design when it is finished. If, in certain designs, the outline of the black ink does not look well, it may be removed by carefully, washing it with warm water,
