PROMINENT MEN'S "AFFAIR OF HONOUR.”

A boxing duel to settle an affair of honour between the head of a well-known London, hotel and a racing motorist was dought in secret in the West-end recently,

It was first suggested that the affair, which da said to have in volved the name of a woman, should be decided by a duel with A distinguished weapons, but member of the National Sporting Club persuaded them to wipe out the score with the gloves.

Accompanied by their seconds, doctors, and a party of City and Wost-end sportsmen, Including several titled people, they met shortly before 6 o'clock at Mr. Fred Dyer's gymnusium at Char- ing. Crois.

"The Arst intimation which 1 had of the affair" Mr. Dyer told a Press representative "was when, earlier in the afternoon, Captain Jackson, who is Interested in box. ing, rang me up on the 'phone..

"The fight was sląged under Queensberry Rules in a 12ft. ring. Captain "Jackson refereed and the editor of a sporting paper acted is timekeeper.

Six Two-Minute Rounds.

"Both men wore boxing shorts and vests, and before entering the ring were examined by two doe-

tors.

"It was to be a fight of six two- minute rounds. One man Was | aged about 40; the other about 30.

"The younger man knew a little about, boxing, but his opponent apparently nothing.

In the first round they, went at each other hammer and tongs, and within the first few seconds both drew blood. They fought them- selves to a standstill.

"In the aggond round the elderly man was still battling gamely, but towards the end the younger man put him down for a count of nine. He made a plucky effort to carry on, but was knocked into the ropes and the referee called the fight

way won.

Blame for the inefcient the Smethwick Fire Brigade dealt with the disaster in the district on September 2, when it lives were lost, has been placed on Chief Officer Arnold.

The Smethwick Watch Comunit- 'tee recently reported a "serious failure to render that instant and effective service which the grandy of the occasion demanded, and which a borough fire brigade nuati at a times be ready to give."

They found that, although the call was answered promptly, the advantage was completely nullified by the engine turning out with wrong standpipe fittings.

London, Dec. 25}"

The Chancellor of the Exeche- quer in the House of Commons last night, said he would consider the representations made by various trade organisations as to tho effect on businoes, and employ- mont of the uncertainty of the position in the next Budget of the duties on silk 'and sugar and the McKenna and the Safeguarding Dution

He could not, however, con- template any departure from the invariable rule that Budget decl-. sions could not be anticipated. After careful consideration of the conditions under which the silk and sugar duties were administer ed he felt justified in saying that In the event of their repeal in the next Budget it would be necessary to take the exceptional course of proposing sonte scheme of rebates to meet, the position of holders of duty paid stocks.

With regard to the thirty-three- and-a-third per cent. McKenna Duties imposed on motor curs, musical instruments, etc. and the duties imponed on certain import- ed articles under the Safeguarding of Industries scheme of the late Government, these were protective. duties. He was satisfied that the situation in the case of these duties would be adequately met by an assurance that if any of them were repealed drawbacks on duty- paid exports, would continue to be paid as was done when the Me- Kenna duljes were removed · 'In 1924.

He had already stated that varlous Safeguarding Duties would not in any case be renewed after the expiry of the perioda for which they were

imposed.-

Replying to Mr. Justice Talbot, Dr. Watson said that he agreed that Lucas had done something which he would not have dreamed of doing had he not been epileptic. He did not agce that Lucas was in a state of epileptic automatism at the time. Mr. Whittingstall, for the de- fence, said that a week ago they were commemorating the people who were killed in the war. That day they had before them a man who was a wreck of the war, and he asked the fury to remember him as they remembered the war itself. Lucas was ordered to be detained during the King's pleasure,

Liberty of Englishmen.

Sir John Pedder-Do you sug- gest that the hours 11 am to 11 pm. for opening should be con- tinuous. Certainly. I have a very strong objection to anything that curtails the liberty of Englishmen unless there is a very strong rea- sun given for it, and I don't think' any reason has ever been given for it in this case.

Mrs. Simon reminded Mr. Ed- wards that Sir Robert Wallace had. said the other day that the de- crease in drunkenness was largely due to the restricted hours of opening..

Mr. Edwards-People are more intelligent now," and for a person:

to be drunk is considered a die- grace. But the all-important thing is the price. The working man in England has to pay 8d, or 4d. for a glass of boer. Anywhere in France you can get a glass of wine or a glass of beer for a Id, It is a great shame that the work- Ing man if he wants a glass of beer should have to pay that high- price,"

Mr. Mallon-Would you drop the price again?say it is a reflection on this country that the working man has to pay this high price for his beer,

Would you drop the price if you had the power?-Certainly

And risk the consequences? Certainly.

Mr. Arthur. Taylor, for years" chairman of the Wandsworth Division Licensing Justices and a member of the County of London Licensing Committee, suggested that if licensed houses were allow. ad to be kept open on week days. from 11a.m. to 11 pm, it would be more convenient::and.: reasonable than at present and remove a large amount of discontent.
