MACÃO MILITARY REVOLT.
MUTINEERS SURRENDER AFTER BOMBARDMENT.
PLOT WHICH FAILED.
Details of the military revolt at Macao show that the mutineers had made pre-arranged plans for a simultaneous rising by the men of four forts; but that only one lot, those occupying Monte Fort, acted. Eventually, loyal troops bombarded the mutineerk for half an hour, and later the revolters unconditionally surrendered.

Paris, Nov. 18. The British Ambassador this. afternoon opened the 'pieturo ex- hibition of Mr. Josselin Bodley, the young English artist, at the Galerie of Bernheim jeune.

grips the spectator like a vice. ous action.
Evidently, saner counsels pre- valled among the men in the other forts, for instead of joining in the mutiny they remained passive and subjected themselves to the orders of their superiors in the usual way.
Meanwhile, the mutineers in Monte Fort proceeded to barricade themselves in, were well armed with rifles and small ammunition, and defied the authority of Police Commissioner Andrade (who at one time was Acting Chief of Staff) who hurried to the Fort in an effort to persuade the men to desist from taking further action.
The military authorities took prompt action to confine the mutiny to that particular fort, mobilising and arming all infantry units, the police force, and re- questing the naval forces to be ready to render assistance. As the Fort is right in the centre of the town, the news of the mutiny spread throughout the population and there was much apprehension, most of the people remaining in doors owing to the uncertainty of the situation.

The portraits have in a different way a similar intense quality. Most discussed will be that of the Vis- countess of Massereene and Fer- rard, the finest Cubist portrait ever painted, all angles and yet all supple: it shows decisively that a woman's beauty can be brought out by a system of points and arrow shafts, and yet be none the less beautiful.
they reached it the mutineers laid down their arms and surrendered.
Our informant explained that the matter the authorities had well in hand, and no further trou- ble is expected as the other troops are loyal to the Government,
One version of the reason for the trouble is, that the Sergeant who was the ringleader applied for an increase of pay which he claimed he, was entitled to by reason of an agreement reached before he was sworn into the service. Because of this application, the report states, he was court-martialled and sentenced to two days' imprison- ment in an army gaol. Shortly after he had served his sentence he again applied for an increase, and it is said he received sentence of a further term of 15 days in gaol. There is as yet no confirmation of this story."
All possible exits were closely watched and armed guards and patrals kept vigil throughout Sun- day night. Early on Monday morning, the authorities conveyed

Authorities Defled.
This hope did not materialise, however, and the men in the Fort continued to defy the authorities and threatened to shoot at anyone who approached. This attitude was maintained throughout Mon- day night, and seven o'clock yes- terday morning found the malcon- Lents still obdurate.

ultimatum which had been delivered 24 hours earlier. From vantage points in the city Government forces at- tacked and an artillery and machine gun bombardment on a small scale was commenced upon the Fort at 8.30. For over half an hour thie bombardment was 'continued, the mutineers replying to the fire, and it was at nine o'clock that the mutineers surrendered unconditionally.
An unconfirmed report states that five men were wounded in the ffray, but to which side they ba- longed is not known.
It la stated that no damage was caused to other parts of the city and that soon after the surrender had been made, business resumed normally, the, city being quiet.
Later Detalls.
As the result of enquiries' mudo an board the s.s. Sui An, which' ar. rived from Macno shortly before. six o'clock yesterday afternoon, we learn that the insurrection ja definitely ended and the colony quiet. Yesterday morning, from the Monte Fort the mutineers are stated to have fired what are be lieved to be small field guns at the other forts which housed the loyal military who were, trying to sup press the rebels. About six or a dozen rounds were fired back, by the loyal troops. Fortunately, the shelling, so far as can be ascer tained, did not result in any Berious bloodshed.
