Another point concerns the head of the lamp control. The centre steering wheel is unquestionably the right place for the switch, and also it may be remarked that the head lamps themselves are the Lucas Billex type, which give a particularly good long-distance beam. The head lamps themselves are mounted on a very strong eross-tube, whch helps to support the wings, and they are adjust- able. These are matters which effect the convenience of the owner who uses the car at night.

Tests on various hills showed that the car's powers of climbing, are in keeping with the flexibility on top gear on the level. A gradí- ent of 1 in 10 approached at 35 m.ph. smoothly and quietly. Long hills of the order of 1 in G were found to be An easy climb on second gear, finishing at 20 to 25- m.p.h.

There are many special mechani- cal features which should lengthen the eur's life. In conclusion, the running of the car in every way justifies the interesting mechanical specification, and is quite in keep- ing with the smart outward ap- pearance.

U.S. CAR EXPORT.

Huge Trade.

The increasing importance of the automobile in the export busi- ness of the United States is re- vealed in figures just released by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, according to A, L. Frank, sales manager of the Stude- baker Pierce-Arrow Export Cor- poration. Automobile not only led in the export of all manufactured products in 1928; but showed an increase of 31.2 per cent. over the total exported in 1927, Mr. Frank pointed out.

"The value of automotive pro- ducts exported by the United Staten last year was $500,174,431. This huge amount placed automo-1 tive products well at the 'head of the export list. Following, in teams of value, were refined petro- leum products, machinery, packing house products, iron and steel mill products, refined copper products, cotton mills products, lumber mili products, wheat flour and rubber products.

"Export of passenger cars from the United States to Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Oceania and Africa were 375,428 in 1928 as against 286,088 the year before. The foregoing figures do not include the number ́of pas- senger cars shipped as 'parts for assembly." Totals of these were 43,472 in 1928 against 45,948 in 1927-a Bilglit decrense.

A FUTURE PROBLEM.

Within 11 years, the already heavy automobile traffic of Cali- fornia will be doubled, according to the Automobile- Club of Southern California." This state- ment is based on the fact that the

has increased at the rate of nine per cent. for the past five years.

· GOOD IDEA.

The above picture shows one of the famous Thornycroft aix-wheeler vehicles which apart from general use, are now regularly employed in some of the most remoto parts of the world. They have proved of remarkable utility in countries where roads are as yet practically non-existant.
