First Radio Exhibition.
HONGKONG'S first radio exhibi-
tion will be opened the Hon- Mr. W. T... Southern (Colonial Secretary) on December 6 and will be continued on the two succeed. Ing days. It promises "something. entirely new for the Colony and will undoubtedly do much to further stimulate interest in radio generally. Not only will local wireless denters have their apparatus on show but there will be a representative display of re- ceivers made by amateurs.
Home construction is one of the most fascinating branches of radio work and judging by the number of kits and parts sold in the Colony is quite popular here. New circuits can be tried out until scoming perfection is reached, while considerable ingenuity "can be displayed in the mounting of the receiver in a suitable cabinet. In connextion with amateur construction a competition, for which prizes will be offered has been organised by the Exhibition authorities. The conditions are such that professional operators and those engaged in the trade are not allowed to enter so that the competition will be strictly on fined to amateur limits.
The conditions are fully set out below.
|
Amateur Competition- Conditions.
(1) The competition. is open to all amateurs in the Colony. Rudio dealers, operators or those profession- ally engaged in radio `are aut allowed to compete.
(2). Sety must be non- radiating and must "be con- struëted at a cost not execed- ing $150.
(3) The set only to be exhibited i.c. batteries and loud: speakers should not be. included.
(1) Sets to be ready for immediate operation on being connected to power and aerini.
(5) Sots should be in the hands of tho exhibition authorities not later than noon on the first day of the exhibition, and names of intending competitors should be submitted not later dhan Monday, December 2.
(6) A charge of one dollar will be made per set exhibited, not more than five sets to be submitted by ench competitor.
(7) The decision of the Judging committee to be con- aidered final.
(8) The exhibition authori- ties do not accept any respon- sbiy for any apparatua exhibited.
Another feature of the exhibi- tion will be the fancy dress dance to be held on Saturday night in the hall adjoining the exhibition rooms. The dance will start at 9 p.m. and will continue until mid- night, the music, of course, buing provided by radio. Prizes will be given for the best fancy dress and fur a spotlight waltz. While. It is not a new departure to have dance. muste provided by radio at a func- Lion of this kind there have only been one or two in Hongkong. There is a certain novelty in the proceeding and there seems little doubt that this part of the exhibi- tion programme will also secure excellent support.
The exhibition will provide an locul opportunity for many residents who have not heard the transmissions from ZBW to jüdge the station's capabilities and it may be that an opportunity will be afforded of reception from mora distant stations. Many new stations have been opened in the Far East in recent years and the owner of a powerful set has a fairly wide range of stations from which to choose.
It should be noted that on Thursday and Friday the Radio Exhibition will be open from 6 pm, until midnight and on the Saturday from 2 p.m. onwards.
The B.B.C. struck a jarring note with a recent talk on marmalade. Fifteen hundred applications for the recipe were received from in- terested listeners.
A Post Office official prosecuting in a wireless licence case said it was difficult these days to tell whether a min was carrying his lunch or a wireless set. Yet the question is merely one of the difference between input and out- put.
Time signala are sent out from Rugby punctually at 10a.m. und 6 pm. The drawback to this time scheme is that you require such a good watch to know the time to time the time.
