FRANCE'S LOSS

THE PASSING OF GEORGES CLEMENCEAU.

During one of his last moments of Incidity M. Clemenceau de clared, "I want no women around my deathbed-no woman, no tears I want to die before mon.”

He even asked that the nun, Sister Theoneste, who has mureed. him with the grestest care, should not be present during his last

moments

M. Clemenceau's will instructs that his body shall be buried In an upright position in his father's grave at Vendee Forest. "for even in death I desire to remain stand- ing"

Later.

cast of the dead statesman. A typical comment in the special editions of the newspapers is the Quotidan's, "We had come to regard Clemenceau as immortal."-Reuter. Georges Clemencedu, the French statesman, was born in Sept. 1841. at Mouilleron. Vendee. He studied medicine in Paris and during the last years of the Empire was several times imprisoned, but eventually got away to America where he earned his living by teaching French and married an American girl by whom he had three children. The fall Empire brought him back to Paris where he became mayor of Mont- martre. In the Chamber he vol against the Peace of Frankfurt (with Germany). Since he over- threw the Ferry Ministry in 1885 he has been known as the "Tiger" and the Cabinet-breaker."
