The Expert Evidence.

Mr. Lloyd explained the process. of fermentation and explained how the temperature of mash rose to a peak and then dropped to the atmospheric temperature again.

His Worship interposed and said that what struck him during the last case was that the whole of the evidence was given by Mr. Taylor, the Monopoly Analyst. He gave evidence of fact as well as expert evidence and at the end of the case he asked his Worship to accept what he had said.

His Worship explained that he would rather that someone else gave evidence as to the temperature of mash, and then Mr. Taylor could give evidence that the mash which was behaving in a certain way had been placed on for. fermentation at a certain time.

Mr. Lloyd said that that was the dithculty. They always had to send their best expert and unfor- tunately there was no other expert of the calibre of Mr. Taylor in the Government Service.

feridants was that labels were te- used, and that the passes issued on the original consignment were used to eaver a second quantity of spirits which had been distilled.

In evidence, Mr. B. C. K... Hawkins mentioned, that he visited the Hung Chan wine shop. in Sham- shuipo, where spirits from the Tin Cheong Distillery were sent, and found no entry in either the in- ward or outward goods books. On enquiry he was told that no spirit had been received that day.

Continuing, witness said that ne then produced the passes found on the second defendant by Detective Serveant Eitches and asked the person in charge of the shop for an explanation.

INDUSTRIES FAIR.

HOLLAND'S SUCCESSFUL EVENT AT UTRECHT.

The 21st. Dutch Industries Fair was held at Utrecht from Septem- ber 3rd to 12th. 1929. The rumber of participants amountod to 800, while the number of visitors may be estimated At about 70.000.

The number of participants was as follows-Holland 624, America 34, Belgium 15, China 1, Denmark

It was then that witness WAB told that 50 Jars had been sent to a wine shop in Hongkong. On ex- amiration of the ling Chan shop's red label book witness found an entry corresponding with the sale, of 30 jars of spirit...

In the case of a distillery where it was a question of telling by ex- perience his Worship said that one got the feeling that, the witness might be wrong.

Mr. Lloyd pointed out that when any illegal process at a distillery was reported the analyst had to be on the spot immediately. He drew his Worship's attention to the fact that the temperature of the mash would be different in a few hours' time and mash could not therefore be left for any length of time before it was tested.

Prosecutor and Witness,

Mr. Lloyd said that he knew the legal difficulty of a man being prosecutor and witness at the same time, but that was a Departmental convenience.
