NORWAY'S ANTARCTIC BID.

Capetown, Oct. 9.

There is a possibility that Cap- tain Latzow Holm, the Norwegian sirman, who has just sailed for Bouvet Island in the South Atian- tie a engaged in more important work than whaling research.

This is suggested by `n`mussage received by the Cape, Timer from its Norwegian correspondent to-day, in which the Norwegian expedition is bracketed with Sir Douglas Mawson's Discovery ex- pedition, and the hint was dropp. ed that the two are, in a measure, competitive.

17

It is reported here that. Helm carries sealed orders, only to be opened at Bouvet Island.

Holm will transfer to the Nor wegia somewhere in the Antarctic. That vessel has been specially quipped by the Norwegian Gov- ernment, and is already in Antare fle waters.

The Thoroy,

Holm on which sailed besides having a fortnight's start, is faster than the Discovery. Sir Douglas Mawson declined to discuss the international rivalre when questioned at Durban.

The circumstances are very sim lar to those attending the depar Ture of Caplain Scott's ill-fate us- pedition in 1910, when Scut! Wha not informed of the expetition d Rould, Amundsen, the - Norwąycan explorer, until the last monicas.
