ANNUAL ANGLO-SCOTTISH

MATCH.

The annual match between teams representing the St. Andrew's and St. George's So- cieties is to take place at Fanling on the 17th instant. The teams will be na follows: Playing brilliant tennis, Cochet,

Cochet was like a machine, 90 perfect were his strokes, timing and placing, and he delighted the crowd with his nonchalant yet studiously correct methods. He gave demon- strations of practically every shot in the game, and in addition re- vealed some of his own exclusive strokes, which left everybody won- dering how he accomplished them. He was amazing on the backhand, and never before in the Colony has there been such a remarkable de monstration of half-volleying, which is of course, one of the most spectacular points in the game.

Brugnon, Landry and Rodel, al- though falling very much short of the "world's best," gave very im pressive displays, which were chiefly made interesting by the contrast in styles. Brugnon demonstrated that superb cut ground volley, by which he makes the ball do many funny things; Landry showed how hard he could drive on both hands and at the same time maintain perfect control over the ball, and Rodel specialised in net play, during which he performed some delightful over- head work.

It was very pleasing indeed to see the local players do so well against the visitors. Messrs. D. and S.A. Rumjahn indulged, in some fine all-court tennis to run Landry. and Rodel to 7-5, 7-5 in the men's doubles match, and they were equally as enterprising and inter- esting to watch as the French pair. The Rumjahns volleyed magni- ficently and many of the rallies. were highly spectacular.

Mr. Lo was at fault with his timing and in attempting to outdrive his op ponent, he often overhit the major- ity of his shots.

The mixed doubles was a very en- joyable, affair. Miss Enid Lo part- nered Cochet against Brugnon and and Mrs. Tottenham, and the four indulged in some light-hearted tennis which the spectators found highly entertaining. Both the ladies brought off many excellent shots and their display was in every way creditable.:

It was indeed a memorable after- noon, and went to show that the standard of local tennis is consider- ably higher than is generally, ne- knowledged.
