MAROON AWAKENS SLEEPING TOWN.

́SHOCK ÓF 'NEW CALL TO

FIRE BRIGADE.

Scores of people left their beds and ran into the streets when, a maroon was fired late at night at Dunmow (Essex) to summon the members of the fire brigade.

It was the first time such a method to call the brigade had been used, and apparently only the fire- men knew its meaning.

The maroon was fired by the captain of the brigade in his back yard.

Many people thought it was an explosion at the gas works, and a crowd of over 200 gathered there.
