Berliners, when you mention Frankfurt-on-the-main, raise their oyebrows, and with a slight de preentory laugh tell you that the town has gone to sleep.

Frankfurt is certainly envious of the unnatural growth of its rival city in the North, Berlin, and sees with growing anxiety how its bankers and business men gru- dually yield to the magnetism of the German capital.

At first an old-established Frankfurt Arm decides to put up a branch Aria in Berlin, so as to be more connected with the business' of the North. Very soon the branch firm has risen to such im- portance that it has dwarfed the Frankfurt businesa. « The heads of the firm settle in Berlin. Their sons are educated in the capital, and when they visit their paternal home call it a provincial town," with the necessary scorn in their voices.

That is the unfortunate lot of Frankfurt-on-the-Main to-day. It

is still living on the traditions of its Bethmanns and its Rothschilds. And attempts to hold up the old business renown. But it has hard fight, especially as a large section of the city is entirely dis Interested in all this. That por tion is the old elty clustered round the Cathedral.

In that quarter one can through street after. street of mediaeval houses on which time has left no mark. Here is a high- gabled house with a beautifully- carved wooden facade. There is ancther tumbling out of ita lean- ing position into the street.
