EXCITING BOWLS MATCH.
POLICE BEAT SHANGHAI BY ONE, SHOT,
Shanghai isin bowlers figured in the Interport on the ove of
very exciting game
green yesterday, when they were beaten by the Police four by a singla shot-17 to 16. On the afternoon's play Shanghai hardly deserved to lose.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1929.
Thon' the Police had a look in. They got a single and then further reduced the deficit with a three. The Police were lying four when the skips wont up, but Malcolm displaced one of them. Good work on the part of Mair at the eleventh, when they claimed two shots, made the scores level, and at the next head the Police

some brilliant work by air their skip, and i the victory gave
considerable
pleasure. The green was playing well except at are end, where, if the woods were delivered a trifle wide, they refused to come in. Of the Shanghal team, Phillips at No. 1 and Dorrance were the pick. Phillips led very well all the way and had his opposite number Boaten on the majority of hends. Dorrance was a bit shy of the fore- hand playing towards Craigengower, but otherwise played consistently. Kerley did some good work at times, but Malcolm, although delivering a number of good woods, was not at his best.
Mair Outstanding.
Of the Police team, Mair was out- standing. He had a lot of work to and rarely falled. The other three, Nolan, West and Hargscaven all came into the picture at one time er another and contributed their part to the Police victory.
The keenness of the game will be
realised when it is mentioned that the
first seven heads produced five of them
going to Shangles,
Then the visitors got a three on the eighth, thanks to Dorrance trailing the jack: Mair knocked one of the Police woods up to take third shot, but with his last wood he put another Shang- hai counter in. At this stage' Shang- hai-were leading 8-2.

Presentation "of Spoons,
At the conclusion of the gamo, Mr. W. Kent, on behalf of the Police Club, presented spoons to the Shanghai bowlers. In doing so, he said that the game bad been a most interest- ing one from beginning to end. Ho would not say that the better team won, but he did hope that on the mor row they would see as keen game. That was not the first time. Mr.
bad Malcolm and Mr. Phillips
played on the Follee green, but be belleved it it was the first visit of the other two members of the Shanghai side.
Mr. Malcolm, in returning thanks, also presented spoons to
to the members to
the
of the Polica tham. He was very pleased indeed with the game and he thought Police deserved their win. They played some beautiful shots, but at the same time there were one or two which were a little bit
bit "pinched."
"I was rather keen to win the match to-day," Mr. Malcolm added,

but I think the result hos
our determination to win and carry the cup and flag back to Shanghal." (Applause).
M Malcolm added he was very pleased with the green. The fact that they lost by one shot was not due to the green.
