HEAVY FIRE DAMAGE

TO THE PARIS.

GRAND STAIRCASE & LARGE DRAWING ROOM RUINED.

Further details of the fire which, as reported at the time, destroyed part of the French liner Faris at Havre show, that the disaster was not exaggerated. The fire, which is attributed to a short circuit in a cabin, broke out about six o'clock, and evidently spread considerably

They know! before it was noticed.

This fact is explained by the ship's being in charge of only a skeleton crew. In less than an hour the most luxurious quarter of the ship, including the grand stair case, the large drawing-room, the first class smoking-room, and in- formation bureau, with much cost- ly furniture, were completely ruin. ed.

in

By eight o'clock the combined efforts of the crew and of the port, naval,

and land fire brigades had succeeded localising the fire in the second- class smoking room. It will be a month or so before the Paris is again ready for service.

The Paris is one of the most palatial of Transatlantic liners. It was launched for the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique eight years ago at St. Nazaire. With a gross tonnage of 84,600 tons, she is driven by turbines. producing 44,000 horse-power at 23 knots and barns oll fuel.

Among the passengers due to leave for New York in the 'Parls was the American, Miaa Edna Ferber, author of "Show Boat," who has been staying in the South of France.
