2,996 DIE TOGETHER.

Shanghai, Sept. 28.

From Kansu province, where many strange and revolting things have taken place, has come an au- thentle report of the cold-blooded massacre of thousands of Moslem males, who were lured from their homes and families under the pre text that they were to be given a lecture, after which roasted barley flour would be distributed.

Full details of the sordid scenes of death; where men innocent of any wrongdoing were ruthlessly glain, have not reached here as yet, although the massacre la re ported to have occurred in August. From Taochow, Old City, Kansu Province, through Hankow, how- ever, has come sufficient informa- tion to verify the first reports.

A Terrible Story.

Private letters received at Tao Chone Prince under orders from chow contain the news that the Lanchow let the Moslems come back to Old City but when inside the city he separated all the males from 15 to 50 years old from the women, children and old men and marched them out of the south gate under pretence of giving them a lecture and distributing roasted barley flour,

As soon as the men had passed through the south gate they were seized and taken to the empty lots and debris strewn yards in the south and southeast suburb and butcher- ed like sheep. By actual count 2,996 were killed in one day. Ten or more were slaughtered later and all the while not one of the women, children or old men got word of it until the next day.

Weeping Women.

It was a mournful wail which burst from them 'when they realiz- ed they had been deceived and all their fathers, husbands and sons massacred I looked down from the wall two days later, says a corres- pondent, and was horrified at the gory sights Moslem women moved among the stain, walling and weep ing, trying to recognize their dead. Chinese who had been pressed into service were either digging holes in which to bury the dead, or were dragging the corpses from the ex- ecution grounds to the place of

burial.

Pools of blood still remained after two days; the sun, though hot; bad not evaporated them.

GIRLS BEFORE COURT FOR

CUTTING TREES...

MUCH DAMAGE DONE..

Four Chinese girls, whose ages

ranged from nine to thirteen, were charged before Mr. T. 3. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning with cutting and damaging pine trees on the Gov- ernment plantation above the Sal Kung Road, Kowloon City.

The defendants pleaded guilty. Mr. G. B. Twemlow informed his Worship that quite a lot of trees had been damaged by young children who were obviously sent out by their parents. All the Department could do was to arrest the children, as the damage was getting serious.

His Worship remarked that the question was what could they do with the young children.
