A pleasing ceremony took place yesterday at Kowloon Dock, when Mrs. F. Syme Thomson christened the Jatest addition to the Union Water- beat Company's feet, m.v. "Tal Yea " in the presence of shareholders and officials of the Company, sentatives of The Hongkong Wham pos Dock Co., Ltd., who designed and constructed the vessel, and Messrs. Dodwell & Co., Ltd., who supplied the machinery.

The new vessel, having an overall length of 105 TL moulded breadth of 22 ft., and depth of 10 feet, is designed to carry 800 tons of fresh water on a draft of about 9 ft.

While this is the second Union Water Beat to be fitted with Gardean engines, the owners have kept abreas. of times by installing for the hire a 162 RHP. Gardner engine of the new Cold Start Full Diesel Type, which entirely dispenses with such ignition devices as lamps, hot surfaces, or electric plugs. It works at: 820 revolutions a minute which will give the vessel a speed of 7 kaats on service.

The Pumping Plant.

The pamping plant consists of a rotary planger type "Truslove" pump driven through gear and raw bide pinion by a twin cylinder Gardner semi-diesel engine of 10 B.H.P. locat- ed in the engine room. This auxiliary oagine, which works at 600 revolutions a minute, also drives one 32 watt D. C. generator. The pump has a capacity of 120 tons an hour,

The pump has to perform duties ranging from & tons of water per hour at heads of approximately 85 to 40 feet in order to cope with the varying conditions met with in watering ships, And naturally this has received the closest attention of pump and engine makers when putting forward their recommendations.
