A

S you motor along the country roads, you

are frequently urged to stop, look, and lis ten avoid accidents. Every woman.. traveling the broad highway of fashion should be urged to do the same; Fur things are happening. Express drains are coming along sa fast and so ruthlessly that no woman is safe who is not alert and keeping her foot on the brake.

Styles are changing rapidly. The dress you huy today may be absolutely paste within the next few months unless you keep your eye on the road.

Many women are asleep at the wheel. There have been no violent and radical changes in fashion in the past few years, and those that have come, such as irregular hemlines and long back and sides, have.. come se gradually that women actually have forgotten the reputation Fashion has fer being fickle. But be ready. Fashion is just full of tricks this year.

This trend is particularly noticeable in coats. The little straight model that wraps about the hips is con- spicuous by its absence at the fall openings in Paris. In its place are flared models that fit in closely at the waistline, with wide, romantic looking sleever and a cut that would make a jig-saw puzzlist weep with crvy.

If the coat is allowed to be straight, it is so intri cately cut, has such unusual neck or hem treat ment and such a completely different feeling than that to which we have been accustomed that it bears not even a family resemblance to the flapperish model we have been wearing.

In fact you can bunt all over for the straight line and not find it. Dresses have chcular lines, molded. hiplines, and often high or at least normal waistlines. One of the most noticeable changes is the element of mystery that has suddenly appeared in gowns for afternoon and evening. No longer are they artless and simple. Sleeves have suddenly become ambi tious and sophisticated, and baffling in cut. A collar does more than simply surround the neck-it has mysterious searf effects that melt away to nothing and so only part way around the throat, completely baf fing you as to where the beginning is. Skirts are different lengths, gawrs contrive double waistlines,. molded hips and bolero jackets all at the same mo- ment. It's all foo confusing,

But you do notice that the waistlines are definitely higher, skirts are shorter and the freedorn of the knees seems to be denied entirely.

The Paris importations shown today tell the story of the changing modes in their own inimitable way. Read them and weep for joy. Because there is some- thing new under the sun, and it's coming into every women's life.

I. THIS Lelong evening gown is of mousseline, in colors that suggest the late sunset. The ground

is a tender gray with flowers in blurred pink and rose. A very unusual effect is achieved at the waist- line, where the bolero and the hip yoke follow the same planting line and the tailored belt follows, the natural waistline. The long, narrow panel that touches the floor and the almost negligible shoulder straps are important new touches.

II.

HERE is a black velvet evening model, with a double-tiered hem and sleeves that recall the middle ages. It is as glamorous a wrap as any woman-particularly a blond-need own.

It may

be worn with or without a shoulder corsage, but a few orchids never ruined any coat, and they add to the charm of this one.

III. THIS Lelong afternoon model is in mousse- line that very sheer looking fabric that wears like cast iron. It is printed in red, black and green, in a bold, bizarre design. Gaze upon those sleeves and turn your back forever upon the sleeve- less mode.

IV. A typically Parisian street costume is this

Lelong creation. Its black cloth cool, with - the ample collar and cuffs of lynx, is united in en- semblehood to a crepe frock of black and white striped and shaded silk. The frock looks simple enough, but the cut is masterful, and the addition of the godets and the molded waistline is a problem, in fashion geometry,

V. OF the three Lelong coats illustrated. here

there is much to be said for each, but for orig inality the prize goes to this model of black marocain with wing sleeves and scarf collar. It is quite the most slinky and exotic wrap that has been seen this season. And harmonious indeed is the black felt hat with the wide points at the side and the fat bow! applied on the crown.. If you think the varap is dead

think again.

VI. FROM Jean Patou comes this handsome

evening coat of lame in the most heavenly shade of old blue and gold; It is banded at the hem and the cuffs with blue fox. The complete al sence of any fur at the neckline and the substitution of the wide scarf is quite in line with the best French customs. You will notice that this coat is shorter in front than in the back, and is worn over a frock of the same fabric,
