CORRESPONDENCE.

AN APOLOGY...

To The Editor of Hongkong Telegraph.]

Sir-The St. John's Cathedral authorities very much regret that statements have appeared in the St. John's Review which they belleve have done more harm than good, and which were the result of the Editor's accepting informa- tion without properly checking It. An apology will appear in the next issue of the St. John's Review."

ALFRED SWANN.

Mr. F. C. E. Rendall represented the first and second defendants and entered a plea of guilty on their behalf to both charges. The third. defendant also admitted the charges.

Mr. Randall said that, according to the first defendant's story, he was a fisherman and on the day of his arrest the other two defen- dants were engaged on board his sampan as folds, They had been to a wedding feast in Yaumati, having rowed there from Aberdeen and whilst on their way back from the celebrations they were halled by a large sampan. A man on the bigger craft asked the first defen- dant if he would row him to the 3.8. Sui Tal, where he would be pald. Neither the first northe second defendant, continued Mr. Rendall, had any knowledge of the contents of the two “sacks. Immediately after their arrest, they assisted the Police to search for the man, but were unable to find him, not knowing where he -lived:

The Police Account. Detective Sergeant Humphreys said that, acting on Information received, he proceeded in a sampan opposite the Wing Lok Wharf on the evening of September 8. The information was to the effect that a sampan would go to the Sul Tal, load opium on board and gaat off again.

A Midnight Chase. Shortly after midnight the MINISTER RELEASED.sampan arrived and on its way, from the Sul Tai after taking the contraband on board, the Police gave chase. The defendants hastily rowed to the larger junk and got on board. The people were aroused by the Police but they, after the defendants' arrests, denled knowing them.

ECHO OF A PARIS -

FRAUD CASE. ··

Paris, Sept. 15. M. Klotz, the former Finance Minister, who was sentenced by the Correctional Court" to "two years' imprisonment för fraud and abuse of trust.by issuing worth lees cheques, has been liberated in accordance with the law providing conditional release after half the sentence has been served with good conduct.-Reuter.

HANKOW AFFAIR.

SETTLEMENT OF B. AND S.. DISPUTE LIKELY.

Hankow, Sept. 16. Following negotiations between H. B. M. Consul and the Mayor, Mr. Liu Wen-tao, it appears that there is every prospect of an early and amicable settlement of the Butterfeld's affair.

There are no developments in the Hankow Light and Power Co, affair, though the "ultimatum" expired yesterday.Reuter.

It was stated that on the sampan. were weights in readiness for dumping the drug over board but owing to the Police being very close the defendants attempted to effect their escape,

His Worship remarked that he intended to fine the first defendant twice the amount of the other two but said that the term of imprison ment in default of payment of the fine would be the same in view of the value of the opium, which was. given as $2,600 for the prepared drug and $2,016 for the raw opium.

The first defendant was fined 318,000 on the first charge 'and $10,080 on the second, the alterna- tive in each case being one year's hard labour. The second and third defendants were each dined $9,000 or one year's imprisonment on the first charge and $5,040 or one year's hard labour on the second. The terms were all made concurrent.

On the application of the Police." his Worship ordered the confisca tion of the sampan.
