CANTON-KOWLOON SEVEN CASES FOR

RAILWAY.

SESSIONS.

NIGHT EXPRESSES MAY BE RESUMED

CUTTING DOWN TIME.

Canton, Sept. 1. It is said that an additional evening, train may be put on each way between Canton, and Kowloon In the near future.

There are already two express trains each way daily; leaving Canton at 8:10 am, and 3.25 p.m. and arriving in Kowloon at 12.07 p.m. and 7.22 p.m.; and leaving Kowloon at 8.05 a.m. and 3.20 p.m. and arriving in Canton at 12.05 p.m. and 7.18 p.m.

It is now proposed to put on an additional train each way leaving at about 6 p.m. and arriving at their destinations shortly before

10 p.m.

The Railway is doing all possible to compete with the various river steamship companies and it must be said that the train route has been growing more and more popular, lately, both amongst the Chinese, who constitute the Bulk of the passengers, and foreigners.

New engines and coaches have been ordered by the Railway Administration some time ago and these should be arriving soon. Furthermore the track,, which had fallen into a considerable state of disrepair, has been receiving a lot of attention lately and new sleepers are being laid.

MANILA

SEIZED ON ARRIVAL.

An interesting case concerning the exportation of a sack of opium, disguised as piece-goods, to Manila, where it was seized by the Customs, was mentioned before Mr. E. W Hamilton at the Central Police Court this morning.

.14

In appearing for Lam Kau, charged under the Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance with unlawfully exporting over 2,000 taels of opium, valued at $25,000, Mr. Leo D'Almada called for in- formation with regard to the attitude of the Revenue Office in the case...

"Revenue Officer Grimmitt said the one made to exportation was Manila, and his Department were waiting for His. Excellency the Governor's decision as to whether it would be worth while to have a Customs officer from Manila for his evidence.

Mr. Hamilton said he would want evidence of arrest, and the facts turning on it..

Mr. Grimmitt said that at the present juncture an adjournment was desirable. When the case came up for hearing, the Superintendent of Imports and Exports would be appearing to prosecute.

Upon his Worship calling for facts connected with the seizure, Revenue Officer Grimmitt said that' a man whom, they would say, was the accused, went to the offices of the Admiral Oriental Line, and there, in shipping a bale of piece goods, consigned to "a man named Wong Yick in Manila, took out a bill of lading. The bill was made out and payment for freightage Iwas made by the accused.

Subsequently, the bale was seized upon being landed from the Pre- sident Jackson at Manila. It was the same bale as that sent from Hongkong, containing not piece- goods, but 2,000 tacls of opium.

Mr. Hamilton said that the Revenue Office, to prove its case, had to prove shipment, the point of its being the same bale. that was seized, and the seizure. If it was necessary he could take evidence that the man could be identified here as the man who shipped the bale. Replying to a" doubt expressed by

Mr.. d'Almada, Mr. Grimmitt said they could give the undertaking that by next week they would be in a position to say whether the witness from Manila was coming.

After further discussion, in which it was mentioned that the probable fine. would amount to` $250,000, the case was adjourned until next Thursday..
