EXTRADITION CASE.

ALLEGED MURDER & ROBBERY IN SHUNTAK 'DISTRICT,

Another extradition case was heard before Mr. E. W. Hamilton at the Central Police Court yes terday, in connexion with an ap plleation by the Kwangtung au- thorities for the surrender of a fugitive who is charged with the double crime of murder and armed robbery.

For the Crown, Mr. L. R. An- drewes Bild the crime was enacted in a village occupied by the Lam clan in the Shuntak district, on May 28 last.

On that day, Lam Cham, a village elder, was out collecting the ancestral funds, and while re turning to his home with the money, accompanied by a clans- man, he was shot by two men, alleged to be the fugitive and one other, and killed. The money was stolen by the two assailanta

who made their escapa...........

On August 12, Information was received which led to the arrest of the fugitive at Yaumati, and hia belag charged under a rant with the murder and rob bery.

The circumstances attending the death of an earth coolie who was killed while engaged in ex- cavation work of enlarging the No. 1 dock at the Kowloon Docks recently, were investigated by Mr. T. S. Whyte Smith and a jury at the Kowloon Magistracy yester-Moan! Ke Ala," day afternoon,;

The jury was composed of Messrs. M. A. Xavier, YB Tak-ting, and Lau Tak-ting.

Dr. J. E. Dovey, described vari- ous fractures sustained by the deceased and said that the cause of death was multiple fractures shock and concussions.

An earth coolie, who had been working together with the deceas- ed, said that his duties were to push trucks of sand to a certain spot from where they were lifted by a crane. One truck load was being raised and the witness, with the deceased, then pushed a second truck load under the one already ascending.

Cross-examined by Mr. J. d'Almada Remedios, on behalf of the fugitive, witness said that the fugitlye was particularly pointed out to him from a number of other pedestrians who were quite close to the fugitive.

Chief Detective-Inspector. Rey- noids gave evidence of having formally arrested the fugitive at the Central Police Station on the authority of a warrant which he produced.

Lum Wan-tin (30). a spinster, at present living at the Fook Lec Boarding House on the central waterfront, stated that she was one of the Lam clan who lived in' the ancestral,village of that name in the Shuntak district.

She had been living with her brother Lam Cham before he met his death in the incident in ques

tion.

Incident Described. Describing the incident, she said that this took place at 6 p.m. on May 23, in their native village, Lam Cham had been to the chief ancestral joss-house on business connected with the ancestral funds, and when he came away he brought with him $200 in twenty-cent pieces.

shot my brother. Prior to this,

Lam Toug snatched the money which my brother had wrapped up in a newspaper and was holding it under his arm. He and the other man ran away,"

Witness, continuing, said ahe ran away, but before this, she had time to notice that another inhabi tant of the village, to whom she referred as Lam Yin, was also shot dead by the assailants.

Questioned by the Magistrate, witness said she had known the fugitive for 20 years. The money that was stolen was part of the ancestral funds of which her bro ther had charge. He took the $200 away from the temple to keep it at home.

The transference of the money was common knowledge to the people of the village. There had been no dispute of any kind be tween her brother and the fugitive, they had been quite friendly, and she could only attribute robbery as the motive.

Cross-examination.

In a series of questions to wit nesa, Mr. Remedios suggested that there had been a split in the Lam Kwong Yuen Tong, the village body having charge of the ad ministration of ancestral funds, and that that quarrel, seven years ago, had led to considerable blood- shed and the loss of lives. "Ho

A Stupid Witness.

The signalman who gave direc tions to the man on the crane said that he also gave warnings to the workmen in the event of danger. On the day in question he had signalled to the deceased to movo away from under the ascending load.

Warning Given.

Mr. D. L. Keith, Superintendent Shipwright of the Kowloon Docks said that he visited the scene of the accident two hours before it had occurred and, seeing several workmen walking under the as- cending load, gave the foreman directions to warn the coulies.

In reply to the Coroner, witness anid that the Dock Company were not responsible for the chain. He thought the contractor was re- sponsible. Witness said that ho did not hear any warning whistle just before the accident.

Referring to the missing shackle-pin witness mentioned that he did not think the original pin was being used. He said that lost and the workman had found a possibly the proper pin had got substitute pin.

The inquiry was adjourned till Tuesday, the 24th.

Air Vice-Marshal Hugh Dowd- ing has gone to Palestine by air to take over command of the British suggested that the fugitive and forces in Palestine.-Reuter. the man who was shot were diametrically opposed to each other as leaders of these two opposing factions.
