'PHONE PROGRESS.
HONGKONG MAY BE LINKED
WITH CANTON,
If negotiations which are present proceeding between the Hongkong Telephone Company Limited and the Canton Muni- cipality are successful, and there. is every reason to believe they will be, at some dato in the not far distant future the long hoped for means of communication between Hongkong and Canton by tele- phone will be established,
It is a well known fact that a Jarge seetion of the business com. munities of these two portą have desired such conmunication for a long time. Chinese business men in particular would find such a trunk service invaluable and nego. tiations which have been in pro- gress since March of thin your give every prospect of resulting in the establishment of an under- ground cable between Hongkong and Canton which will make this connexion.
Enquiries made at the local Telephone company's offices yester- day afternoon, did not elicit ກ great deal of information on the point because there was but little available owing to the fact that negotiations have not yet finish- ed, there 'being still a number of matters to be discussed.
Cable 113 Miles Lung.
It is intended, however, to lay load covered doublo steel arifioured copper conductor tele phone cable 113 miles long. It is not as yet known what traffic this cable will be called upon to carry but it is most likely that between 12 and 20 lines will be used. The actual work itself will take he tween six and nine months so that directly the two parties concern ed have settled matters to their satisfaction the service will soon be available. Automatic tele. phones are already being install ed in Canton su that there will be no difficulty in that connexion.
The method of payment for the. use of the trunk line has not as yet definitely been decided upon but it appears likely that sub- seribers who will perd to use the line will be required to pay a de posit in addition to the subscrip tion for heal calls. A check will be kept on all trunk calls put through which will be paid for in 'The ardhary manner and the ad- ditional deposit will be held for the purpose of protecting the Hongkong Telephone Company Against any unpaid hills for trunk ens. It will be refunded in full; if a subscriber diapenses with the trunk line, provided of course that! outstanding bills have been paid. in which ense these amounts will be deducted from the déposit.
