MODERNIST POLICY MUST PREVAIL.
London, July 10,
Dr. Barnes, Bishop of Birming- ham, has issued a statement on “
in the policy for modernists" Church. This in a sequel to the alterention between Dr: Barner and Dr. Furse, Bishop of St. Albans, in the Convocation of Canterbury last wock.
It will be recalled that on that occasion, the Archbishop of Can terbary rebuked Dr. Barues for. what he described as his provocá- five language.".
The following is the Bishop of Birmingham's statement in full:.
Modernists who give me friendly support may expect a statement, in view of the debates in Convocation Jast week. Of Episcopal poliry little need be said." The majority of my colleagues have resolved upon action which has not the sanction of law. The future will decide whether such action can succeed." I doubt it.
My doubts are strengthened by the conviction that we cannot gef. any unity worth having within the Church of England unless sich unity is based upon sound doctrine. In particular, it is of primary in periance that the Church · should determine whether ita suernmental doctrine is to be that of the Re formers or that of the Roman Church. While this beision is in the balance controversy will be acule. Unfortunately Buch troversy relates to principles so vital that it is impossible fo avoid giving offence,
-
The great cleavage is between the religion of the Spirit which drawn man directly to God and that of a velanical sacramentalism working upon the supposition thi spiritul properties can be made to inhere in material objects. We say, try n we may, but if our teach ing is clear and decisive those whose views it condemus will be hurt.
Avold Personal Attacks,
Bonio may recollect whnt, if my imemory is correct, w
Blyly ironical passage of Matthew Arnold, in which he spoke of a Bishop of Culentia whose ideas and writings had been "among the main provar- tives of the Indian Mutiny." No missionary pan avoid language which some of those whom he wishes to convert will deem pro- vorative,
But, especially to my young Modernist and Liberal Evangelical friends nalong the elergy, I would say that while we must teach elvar- ly we can, and mat, epleily avoid all personal attacks, The law of Christ says that he who may be attacked mist not attack in res fuch. It is even doubtful if he shoubi seek to defend himself. A Christin teneber is nf TO importance compared with th drietrinos which he is calted to maintain, Seme who blend- ed for peace during the War learned that he who does not suffer in the service of truth in nolikėly to give effective service to truth; and the knowledge has been 隐 wholesome discipline.
Two forta
eleny. The Modernist heirs of the Evangelion) tradition are now in a minority, in the English Clunch. But we are fully assured that our teaching anust prevail if the Church of Eng land is to became once again the Church of the English people. The crisis in, which we find ourselves may varily make us over auxious Let us avoid excitement and read caufident that truth will prevail
then and as God wills.
It is above all things necessary. that, in combining the sound casen- tials of the Anglican tradition with modern knowlesige w do not. forget that the heart of our faith is the endeavour to know God and to serve Him. We believe that we cau know God belter the mure fully we search out the meaning of the life of Jesus. Our Lervice, more- over, ennnot be dissociated from an active concern in the welfare of our fellows.

What especially grieves me, in connexion with the controversy in which I am most nuwillingly involv ed, that my desire to unite faith in Christ to an enthusiasm for social welfare may be forgotten.
