The highest in rank of the con- cubines was considered to be the head of the family, but he could not remember who occupied that position when his daughter was married. If there had been a tin fong wife at that time, it would have been, correct, according to Chinese custom, to have consulted her.

Mr. Sneldon:-You did not tako! the trouble to find out if your! father had a tin fong wife to be consulted?--I did not ask my fa ther and he had never that he had taken a fin fong-wife. I did not enquire.
