Two farms have been bought by Imperial Chemical Industries at. Jealotts Hill, where cattle sheep browse picturequely below the gentle hill where laboratories, machines, and a thousand or more research plöts are assembled in an imposing phainnx. Jealotta Hill is to be the G.H.Q. of research and applied agricultural science for the Empire-Lord Meichelt mentioned even the world. The emphasis is on Britain, but in- quiry into the best treatment of tobacco, encao, rice, cotton, and such an-English crops will be directed from this centre, which will send our perpatetie seekers niter truth into all parts of the Empire. The ambition 'is that Jenlotts I shall do for applied. science--and do by force--what Kew and Rothamsted do in pure science for those who care to pro fit. For propaganda is of its

Imperial Chemical Industricu have greatly helped to a more of less new development of farming. Their peers have proved that, young grass, forced by nitrogen- ous stimolants and fool, and fed or own o the right system, may be an intensely nutritious food and that therefore grass farming is not necessarily thin or extensive, farming. By far the most interesting exhibit WHA The
the two grass: chines for drying it, as it left the field; and the various forms of grass briquetted grass, grass in cakes, in buns, in slices, in sticks, compressed grass,' powder- vd grass, sliced grass, baules of grass, stacks of grass. Mr. J. H. Thomas, fresh from his en- deavours for curing unemploy- Shanghind inent, said he was interested be cause grass meant mare employ ment, a more novel and during maxim thau perhaps, he fully realised.
Animal and Plant Nutrition,
The conception of this research station, which is also a practical commercial farm, is founded on a view of business very rare in England. The research includes animal nutrition, as well as plant patent iron and concrete stables, and a variety of fundamental re- search work of which the appli- cation is certainly not likely to be immediate. Quite frankly, Imperial Temical Industries want to sell aulphate of ammonia and the nitrogen that its vast ma- chines comb out of the air; but because this is an essential food in plant growth, these researches into its use: In this and that soil, in this and the other climate, at! one senson and another, on one side of the world,or the other, in this form or degree of mixture, In its effects on animals that feed, as well as on the matured foud- all these researches must neces rarily be of general benefit to the human race. They are not quack- ery, because it is to the benefit of the ICJ. that as many producera is possible should know all about them. The more the farmer is brought into touch with selence (a work in which Sir John Russell at Rothamsted has been singularly successful), the heiter both for the furmer and the authors of this Imaginative endeavour,
Nitrogen Then and Now,
-Sir Frederick Keeble, whose migrations have included the Ministry of Agriculture and the Chair of Botany at Oxford, has mobilised a good deal of the best scientife Intellect
of the world. The farms are in their infancy, the research plots and labora- tories are in their infancy; but the uttalian of eminent farmers, rencare workers, botanists, polie) ticians, and industrialists who us sembled for the opening and in spected the farm; the plots, the machine, the stock, the newly de- rigned stalls, and the laboratories, and who listened to the speeches were it was clear-deeply Im- pressed by the imaginatvie width of the central iden. We are in- deed near the millennium when the sale of a particular product is based on the good of humanity!
A curlous personal coincidence. arises. It was touched upon by Lord Birkenhead, Ludwig Mond, almost the greatest of the chemists who have applied their knowledge, to commerce, feared, like Sir William Crookes, that the world might one day starve for want of nitrogen, Lord Melchett, his son, is to-day perhaps the greatest producer of nitrogen ir the world, and, It comes from the inexhaustible fount of the air.
