The Police officer replied that in that case the owners would have to take delivery of their pigwash After midnight, which necessitated the junk remaining at the wharf the entire day.

An elder of the district, on behalf of the pig owners, interviewed the Inspector and asked for an exten, sion of the hors but was informed that the ofleer could not grant them that privilege.

OBITUARY.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. WONG TIN-TSEUNG.

-

This is not an ordinary dispute between the contracting parties of a Land Exploitation Co., but one between the beneficiaries and an avowedly philanthropic Company, the articles of which distinctly no. Directors would stated that draw any remuneration and that profit, if any, would go towards charity, I have advisedly used the word "beneficiaries" for it was the very term employed by H. E. the Governor when he referred to the scheme at the Council meeting on the 27th ulto.

The Government must have.ap- preciated at the time, the spirit which netuated the promoter of the scheme, for, they also joined hands in the philanthropy by conceding to the beneficiaries 3,231,000 sq.' ft. of Crown Land, properly levelled and complete with storm water and Sewage systems, at the very low price of 12 cents er foot, and upon most unprecedented easy terms of payment.

This concession evidently was on rouviction of the magnanimity of the scheme as proposed by the promoter and his associates.

The Government having linked itself in this way with the promu- ter and backing it so to say, before the public. at a time when the Housing Problem in the Colony was so neule. It surprising that so many subscribers came forward and signed contracts" in the form supplied by the company 7

think

If the Government now that the signatories must abide by remember their contracts let it that these signatures were obtuin- ed on the assurance that the ab- solute control of the scheine would be in the hands of one of the most respected citizens of this colony or of his accessors, the General Manager for the time being of one of the most powerful companies of this Colony; and also that the Gov- ernment was sponsoring it.

And now that the beneficlaries have a grievance which to every impartial mind seeme justifiable can the Government any that it has no concern in the mater? In its reply to Hon. Mr. Braga's quea- tion No. 15 it disclosed the follow- ing fact:
