“MAGICIAN' AND HIS CULT.

END OF ENGLAND PROPHESIED.

Berlin, July 1. Joseph Weissenberg, whose re cent prophecy" that England į would disappear into the sea was falsified by the absence of any} unusual natural phenomena in the United Kingdom on the fatal day, is now in danger of coming into collision with the law.

The Berlin criminal police have Lo-day confiscated the body of a drugglet named Wernicke, who, died last Thursday from blood poisoning due to a boil on the neck. Wernicke, who was a fanati cal adherent of Weissenberg, re- fused any other treatment than that which the "prophet" should proscribe.

The prescription, It is alleged, was the application of soft cheese to the wound together, with a diet of buttermilk,

The doctors who at length treat. ed Wernicke, when his case was already hopeless, deziared that there would have been no question of R fatal issue if recourse had been had to the ordinary processes of Befentific medicine:

The criminal police are stated to be consulting with the Public Prosecutor as to whether the case does not call for proceedings. In

The Courts.

WHAT SPEEDS ARE "DANGEROUS?"

45 MILES AN HOUR NO

OFFENCE..

London, June 28. The problem of what constitutes dangerous driving, having regard to the speed of a motor-car, was revived in a significant form yes- terday by several decisions in police courts. The fact that the

peed limit" fixed by law is now practically non-existent so far as the police are concerned adds In- terest and importance to these de- cistona,

In a caso ut' Chester Petty Sen. ions the speed was the main point in n case in which Lance Corporal Richard Saville, of the R.AS.C.. wag nequitted on n charge of dangerous driving.

Announcing the magistrates' decision, the Chairman (Judge Whitmore Richards) gaid, "The Bench are unanimous that driving at an excessive speed, allowing even for the fact that the driver in going at 45 miles an hour, does not constitute dangerous driving except when there is oncoming traffic.

"In order to convince us of dangerous driving," he said, "it is necessary to prove that some mem- bera of the public were in danger. According to one witness there would have been no danger till the

Evidence was given that the motor-ear was driven by Saville at 46 miles an hour and a tyre barat. The molor-car crashed into a bank with such force that the body of the car shot off the chassis. The car then caught fire and the oc· cupants were taken to hospital...

The affair is serving to direct atyre burst." good deal of public attention to Welasenberg and his sect. What is causing alarm is the growing number of adherents to a sect whose practices and pretensions are the outcome of a thoroughly unhealthy state of mind. The leader Weissenberg claims to be able to conjure upirits, to heal the sick by the laying on of hands, and in work all manner of miracles.

Outrageous Claims,

Magic is his method, and his ap. peal is through the medium of the most primitive forms of sugges- Lion. Nor in he content merely to be the founder of a sect; he claims to be the Divinity in mor- tal form, and his followers be- lieve in him as such.

"Criminal Speed.”

In another case in which Sir Mark Tatton Sykes was summoned at Clerkenwell (London) Police Court for dangerous driving, Mr. Barker (for the police) said it was we serious case owing to the enor- mous speed.

At 10,35-p.m. on May 3, he said, Sir Mark drove a big car at 50 miles an hour in Holloway and came into collision with a small enr, "

Sir Mark, in evidence, suk, his; speed was 30 miles an hour. The small car crossed his path and he swerved to avoid striking it full

Yet close observers of Weissen berg deny him any kind of my stical inspiration or religious ori- ginality. Hysterical outbursts are art of the recognised, ritual of the sect, not only during worship | but during the most ordinary por-force. formances of everyday life, such as taking a meal,.

In Weissenberg's weekly organ, the White Mount, of, which the circulation is given as 17,000 and in which the number of ativer fisements testifies Lg some finan- cial Lacking, interviews are pul

shed with the ghost of Bismarck and the Arrhangel Gabriel,

The same publishers issue a brachure staining, for instance, "eosmological explanations of the jlitico-geological prophecies of the last few months." referring, of enese, to the destruction of Eng- land or Benbaark and to epidemic outbreaks of pests in Russia or Germany,

FLIER KILLED AT PRACTICE.

MACHINE CRASHES, AT HENDON.

London. June 27. While practising at Hendon yes terday for the air pageant, an R.A.K. pilot crashed in a spinning nose-dive and was killed,

Nine machines were lying in formation over the zerodrome when the signal was given that a single-seater fighter, piloted by Flying Officer V. O. Eyre, had been

"shot down."

Eyre nose-dived, but his machine went into a spin and he was unable 10 recover control,

Eyre was rushed to hospital after the crash, but died shortly

after admission,

Spiral Spin. "When a plane is shot down' it is meant to do fake nose-dive," said an expert. "Other planes this morning were 'shot down' and, after a short dive, lattened out aml made safe landings.

"The cause of the accident to this machine is not yet known, but It seems that it got into a spiral epin, and the pilot was unable to right it."

Mr. Robert Harris, of Hendon, 'said: "I now the nine aeroplanes dying, towards the aerodrome at a good speed. As they passed over the aerodrome one of them, a small single-senter, auddenly nose-dived towards the earth.

"It got into a spin and turned over is it went. Finally, like a silver bullet, it hit the ground."

The crash occurred just in front of that part of the aerod- rome which has been railed off for spectators for the pageant on July

13.

Senres of workmen, some of whom were erecting dummy battle- ships as bombing targets, anw the smash,

After the accident all machines were ordered into the air. This is the first crash that has occurred at Hendon in connexion with the pageant, which has been held an- nually for the past seven years.

The Mugistrate (Mr. Dummett) said he had heard a good many of these cases, but never a worse one. The defendant was driving at a speed which was really criminal al such a place. The dangerous driving was that he was going at

mantraus pace. There were pre- cious convictions and such # driver was a menace,

He imposed a fine of 210 with. 210 10s, costs and disqualified the defendant from driving for twelve: months,

Collision Sequel.

In third rase Earl Erne, Serond Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Gards, residing at South- wik-crescent, Hyde Park, was fined f with be, eosts by Mr. Powell, at Marylebone, for driving his motorene in the Bayswater-road at a speed dangerous to the public. A second summons for driving without lights was dismissed, and a third, for driving in a manner dangerous to the public, was with- drawn.

Three taxi-cub drivers alleged that at 130 on the morning of April 21, Earl Erne, drove at a speed variously estimated at 45 to 60 miles an hour. His car struck a taxi-cab as it was being turned round, knocked down a lamp-post, and broke a partion of the kerb.

Earl Erne sustained injuries to the head and was removed to hos- pital in a semi-conscious condi ton, but was not detained.

Giving evidence, Earl Erne said he approached Queen's-rond at 20 miles an hour, and was gathering speed to pass n taxicab when, without warning, the driver "lock ed round" to the right. He did no, too, to try to avoid a collision, but there was a crash, and he remem

red no more.

K

It was possible, he said, that his foot might have slipped from the brake on to the accelerator. the taxi-cab driver had kept to his own side of the road the accident would not have happened.

Mr. Powell, the magistrate, sald he was quite convinced that Barl Erne was driving at an excessive speed.
