TIMELY HELP BY UNDERGRADUATES!!

Oxford, June. 11. Undergraduntes in pyjamas played a prominent part in ro- moving furniture and other valu- ables during a fire which broko out in Merton College, Oxford, in the early hours today. An up- dergraduates' sitting-room was burnt out, and an adjoining bed- room was, badly damaged,

The discovery was made by Mr. Barnard Berg, an undergraduate, whose rooms are In St. Albans Quadrangle. He woke to And a light shining under the door of his sitting-room. He opened tha door and saw that oak panciling surrounding the fire-place was; ablaze. Fortunately, Mr. Berg'a room had two doors, and he was, able to escape and give the alarm. Undergraduates Roused. Meanwhile, the occupant of a house on the other side of the atroet had also seen the fire, and he aroused Mr. Denne Jones, n tutor of Merton.

The night porter, Mr. W. A. Major, endeavoured to put out the flames with, fire-extinguishers, but found that they had too firm hold. Oxford Volunteer, Fire Brigade was then called.

About forty undergraduates. sleeping in the neighbourhood of the fire were aroused. They im- mediately began to clear the farni- ture from other rooms. From the Junior Common Rogm, which is beheath Mr. Berg's rooms, were taken chairs, writing deska, tables, and glass cases containing row ing cups, and piles of furniture were stacked in the quardrangle. The undergraduates not only rendered splendid service while the fire was in progress-the out- break was overcome by 3 km- but "ransacked" their rooms for any dainties which they could find.
