Swimming.

SOME COMMON-SENSE HINTS.

A sensible swimmer might be, defined as one who, like a sensiblo motorist, never takes chances. Having learnt the essentials pi the art she Anda, as the skater does, that sho Rover loses them when out of practice. Op the other hand a really good pers former realises that, as in tennis and most sports, much and con- tinuous practice is necessary to keep her up to concert pitch.

A Question of Minutes—or Hours.

It is entirely wrong to bathe shortly after a heavy meal, and unwise to do so directly after even a light one. As to the length of time you can remain in the water, this depends upon many questions, such as physical fit- ness, custom, and, the tempera- ture of the clements.

Does Bathing Spall One's Tennis?

The next point is whether the "eye" is at its best after bathing. It is commonly held by cricketers, tennis players, and others that they should not bathe just before attempting to be at their best at other sports. Perhaps this is duo to the fact that swimming is an exacting and ring exereise, as people will find if they try to do a lot of it on a day when they have other strenuous sports.

Another question which might be debated is whether it in the glare of the sun, or the exposure of the head to heat, or keeping the hend much under water as in deep diving which accounts for the headaches some switomers plain of. Whatever explanation you favour, the appropriate cor- rectives are not far to geek.

com-

Swimming in a tiring sport, but that does not prevent its being an extremely good exercise for "ill, and especially for those unfor. tunnte individuals who, from one cause or another, suffer from weakness or disability of the legs. Tiring for Nerves and Muscles.

The density of the water sup- ports the body to a very large extent, so that a min suffering from complete paralysis of both legs has been known to get the greatest enjoyment from swim- ming, in his case, of course, with the arms only.

Yet the fact remains that swim- ming is a ring exercise to the muscles, a very large number of which it calls into play; and also to the nerves, beenuse those who are not skilled are apprehensive, and those who are skilled are apt to concentrate very hard upon their art. These facts apply also, and even more, to diving, which needs, perhaps, more courage, self-con-

trol, and determination.

Why Skilled Instructors are Exsential.

In all sports, but perhaps most of all in swimming, get the best instruction you can from the start. Bad habits, either of, breathing, upon which a tremendous lot de pends, or the control of the muscular movements, are so easily acquired and so very difficult to erudicate later.

How often, for instance, does one hear the criticism about some lawn. tennis player or cricketer that he could improve his game 25
