Mr. C. J. Conway, K. C., for Mr. Erridge, said the contention was that the food supplied to him and his fiancee was not Feche Melha at all. They had previously had

A. GRANDMOTHER'S PAMPHLET.
CONVICTION TEN YEARS
AFTER PUBLICATION. 2.
New York, Apr. 26. Mrs. Mary Dennett, a grey-mir- ed grandmother, and author of a pamphlet. "The Sex Side of Life," has been convicted of sonding obscene matter through the mall.
Mrs. Dennett wrote the leaflet ten years ago for her own sopa, because she could not find a suitable and instructive treatment of the sex question. Then she published and circulated it at the request of the "Medical Review of Reviews," She was stunned by the verdict, which makes her subject to the maximum of five years' imprison- ment and a 5,000 dollar (£1,000) fine, or both.
The entire defence scheme was wrecked by the judge's rulings, which prevented a number of pro- minent publicists, welfare workers, and representatives of religious
and educational bodies which used the pamphlet testifying to its merit. The judge required the jury of middle-aged men to decide for themselves whether the pamph- Jet was obscene,
Mrs. Dennett's attorney contend- ed that the conviction meant. con- demning the "children of the next | generation, to getting their know- ledge of sex from the street." The prosecutor argued that Mrs. Den- nett could give Her own children what they wanted, "but when she raised the kitchen window and called to the neighbours it whe He insisted that another matter."
a "pamphlet was like a razor în the hand of an adolescent."
Refusal to Pay Fine.
Mrs. Dennett, encouraged by the support of an outraged Press at the manner in which the trial was conducted and at the jury's verdict announced that she would not pay the fine, preferring Imprisonment if necessary. She said: "It is the Government that is in disgrace, not "
During the discussion of the motion it was brought out that the Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Virginin had complained to the postal authorities regarding the pampli, let, starting the prosecution after it had been in circulation nearly ten ybara, The Press takes strong exception to the refusal of the judge to let prominent doctors and educationists explain how pamphlet was used.
