WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1929.

SHANGHAI RACES.

RESULTS OF THE SECOND

DAY'S EVENTS,

The following appeal to end civil

Yesterday was the Shanghai Dorby war in China, addressd to Marshal day, the second day of the Spring Chiang Kai-shek, citizens and Bol- meeting. There were 50 entries for diors, has been received from Mr.the big race, for prize money of Tis. Too Tean-tal:

2,500 for the first home, Tls. 1,000 for the next, and Tls. 500 for the third.. The race, over a mile and a half, was won by Messrs. Law and flick- ing's Glon Dochart. Tho winner was Being a retired fender of the Re-ridden by Needa. Next up was Fin volution, and having started the nan, of the same stable, ridden by work of organizing the Revolution- Springfield, with Mr. Harris' pony Lo ary Movement with the late Mr. Corsaire running into third place. Yuseng Ku Wan (assassinated in Hongkong on 10th Jan. 1901-See Dr. Sun Yat-sen's letter of lamen- tation to me dated 13th February, 1901) and others in 1887, some years before the, late Dr. Sun Yat- sen started and joined hands with us in 1895, I believe it la my boun- den and rightful duty at this criti- cal moment in China's history, to give some warning wards of ad vice to the leaders of the contend- ing factions, who are responsible for the bloodshed and warfare, which is disturbing the world, and tearing China to pieces.

And, in the interests of histori- enl accuracy, and in order to pre- vent doubt and misunderstanding, I tako tho liberty of quoting Mr. Thomas H. Reid (Editor of the China Mail, &c. &c.), one of the first to support the Revolutionary Movement in 1895, as under,-

move-

"You have the great satisfac. tion of knowing that you assist ed in placing four hundred mil Hons of your fellow men on the rout to a better and more humane life, and in initiating ment which will go down in his- tary as one of the most moment- ous in the records of the world." (29th November, 1912.): and also. Mr. Chesney Nuncau (Editor of the Hongkong Telegraph, &c., &c.), one of the early suppor- ters of the, Revolutionary Move ment in 1895, who wrote,-

-

"It marks you as the Liberator for not of your countrymen, only did you carry through the 'spade work that made ultimato auccess possible, at the risk of your life und of all near and dear to you, but you mostenta- tiously persevered in the great and good work until your efforts were crowned with sneeeяs.

The time of the race is self-explana- tory-1.28 for the 14 mile gallop, Thore must have been a large feld and ns the pari-mutuel paid only $13.20 on the winner, according to our Shanghai correspondent, it is likely that Glen Docluirt ran favourite.

There were 'thirteen races, and as far as can be gathored some of the results were upsets.

The full results of yesterday's rac- Ing. kindly supplied us by the Hong- kong Club, fellow. The weights aro given after each hereo:.
