WOMAN'S WORLD

FOR OUR LADY READERS.

Your Children.

[By Olive Roberts Bartón.]

One of the most demoralizing things to children is the parent who changes his mind. Not the parent who acknowledges that he is wrong, long life to him) but. the one who anys one thing onej day and another thing the next.

Often the paront with this pen- chant for changeableness is not the weak-kneed individual one might think. He gives ordeia in

firm tone that brooks no delay. Did you ever know anyone like that? The last generation was pretty good at it.

This type of mind-changing parent is disappearing very fast.: New ideas in child training nave: regulfed in parent training, and] the parent to-day who changes hin mind is usually one who has thought things over and found a helter way.

A new novelty in undies is a combination garter belt and crepe de 'chine panties.

A Problem.

CAREERS LESS POPULAR.

Is there a possibility that the present craze for careers is begin- ning to weaken among those wo- men who are not driven thereto by necessity or a superllulty of brains to take them up?

Lately I have heard a good deal about the disillusionment of parents who have provided the funds for prolonged and expensive training for daughters who have not been made, appreciably happier in the “nd through the steps taken to 'pro- vide them with careers, and of daughters who have not been able to find niches that have made up to them for all the social pleasures which they have given up while training.

There are still with us a number of parents who have the unfortun ate habit of back-firing commands," When a parent, is inconsistent the children will be inconsistent; They lose respect for authority to belp with and not knowing what is expected of them they are Be

Children of changeable parents are almost invariably insubordi nate. Observe the family where you suspect this sort of condition exista. Watch the children rush

in and ask permission to do some thing they were allowed to do the day before. For no good reason on earth they meet with a prompt refusal.

THEIR POOR SENSE OF HUMOUR.

A writer in a Home Sunday paper declares that women have no sense of humour. It is not a new charge that has been brought against the sex; but it is still difficult to com- bat it generally.

It has been suggested that

Án'even more damaging confes- sion was recently made by a Soviety girl. "There is only one. woman whom I can honestly any is a real friend," she said, "and that is my mother.":

The reason, afie", explained, la that all women are too jealous of each other ever to display or appreciate

real friendship. "Most, if not all, women are ents," she asserted.

That is probably stretching it too far, but it is true, in part at lenst. Men-who, of course, are not to be regarded as being altogether unprejudiced in such a matter will give you their ver sion of the matter. They do not generally have any liking for a woman who is not popular with other women. The woman who is well liked by her own sex, they argue, surely possesses qualities! which makes her a superlatively lovable character among a sex which, as is alleged, looks askance upon most of its members,

To return to the question of a suse of humour. In literature, itį may be admitted the, wonian- humorist is a very modern innovation. Florence Kilpatrick, In her writings, certainly gives evidence of possessing that gift; and there are one or two others of promiag.

The women writers of a previous generation-the Jane Austens, the Brontes, the George Eliots, the Mrs. Henry Woods-but very oɛea- sionally deviated from the path of seriou and sentimental drama to Indulge in the diversion of quite a mild literary laugh.

It is rather a pity, is it not, that) women are so slow to move lo laughter? They would be even so

Many of the season's evening gowns are short in front, but even these away gracefully at the aldes and dip low at the back. This model, in gold coloured charmeuse, is a most effective illustration of the mode, the slanting flounces of the skirt revealing a petticoat of gold lace. The tawny colour-scheme is completest by

a spray of deep bronza flowers.
