A briet official statement, issued to-day, records that two raids have been carried, out on Northern boundary by Merlles tribesmen from Abyssinia who caused the death of between 20 and 30 Turkana tribesmen settled on the shore of Lake Rudolf. The statement adds that all the looted stock was recovered by patrols of the King's African Rifles,

Behind this bald announcement les a story of clever, military work on the part of two White officers and a handful of native soldiers, upon whom devalves the onerous taek of policing the long bush frontier of Southern Abyssinia, where peaceful native life is often disturbed by cattle-hunting raiders from across the border.

The depredations of the raiders are usually accompanied by mur- der, and on March 12, when a small party of Merilee raided the Tur- kana, two Kenya tribesmen were murdered before the raiders made off with their spoils,

Raiders Intercepted. They were pursued by a British officer with about thirty native troops. The raiders, however, had a good start and could only be kept on the move until they had recross- ed the frontier. The officer and his men were still following them northwards, when another purty of raiders, stated to number 300 and principally armed with spears, passed the little patrol in the dark-
