SERIOUS OFFENCES.
SHIPMASTER HEAVILY FINED
AT MARINE COURT.
Defendant could not understand English and it was with some diff culty that his Worship at last made him understand the charges. When he did, he pleaded guilty on both charges.
Mr. C. II. Thompson, Boarding Officer, who prosecuted, Informed his Worship that the authorities wished to press the charges. Ho enfd the an. Tal Poo Sek arrived in port with a total of 731 passengers. That, he continued, would be 171 in excess of the number defendant was allowed to bring into the port, his certificate only allowing him to bring in 500 passen gers. On the table K (a) form, which Br. Thompson showed his Worship, the number brought in by the vessel was given as 689-192 less than the actual number, said Mr. Thompson.
Remarking that both were very serious offences and that he could not take a lenient view of the case, his Worshly imposed a fine of $800 or four months' hard labour on the first count and $200 or two months' hard labour on the second.
