MAN FOUND DEAD.

AFTER BEING GAGGED AND

BOUND BY ROBBERS.

During the course of a robbery which was carried out on tho ground floor of No. 61, First Street, on the night of March 14- 15, this year, the master of the shop was bound and gagged, and when later attended to it was discovered that he was dead. Arising out of this occurrence a Chinese named Lam Hop was charged with robbery and with stealing a serge jacket and a purse containing $1.50 in money before the Puisno Judge (Mr. Justice Wood) when the Criminal Sessions were resumed yesterday afternoon. There was an alternn. tive charge of counselling, procur ing and commanding two men un- known to commit the robbery.

Mr. Somerset Fitzroy prosecuted for the Crown and the prisoner was undefended.

The first witness was Lai Chak, who stated that he was a relative of the master of the shop and was employed in the shop as a foki. The prisoner and other men had previously been employed at the shop but they had been dismissed. On the night in question, witness said that he was dozing when the cock- priabner descended from

loft where he was sleeping, and told witness, that he was going to. obey a call of naturo.

Shortly afterwards witness cald that he heard the prisoner's voice, and two men appeared at his bed- side and threatened to kill him if he apuke. Witness was seized by the throat and was nearly throt tled, after which he was bound and gagged.

When he succeeded in freeing hour himself, a quarter of an later, witness found that tho articles mentioned in the chargo were missing. He was very much frightened and dashed out of the his shap. After completing his question- Jury that the witness had accused the prisoner in connexion with the crime and the question was whether he was to be believed or whether It was possible that he himself was trying to concent some crime of his own.

Replying to the jury, witness Haid that there never had been a whistle in the shop.

An interpreter gave evidence as to reading a charge to the prisoner at the Police Station, in reply to which he stated he was asked by two dismissed fokis to open the door and let them into the shop, but this he refused to do.

Evidence was given by Sub- Inspector Rozeskwy to the effect that when Lai Chak arrived at the Police Station he had various cords tied round him and a pair of trousers tied round his neck, but there was nothing that would have prevented him from taking them off himself. There was, he said, some confusion behind the counter.. Witness had, not Meen the pair of socks that Lal Chak had spoken of,
