AN INSIGHT INTO THE LAWS OF MASS PRODUCTION.

The secret of mass production at low cost, as practiced in the automo tive business, is the secret of strict adherence to a series of "laws of production" Inld down by economists i only a few years ago.

These laws and how they. have been observed in such plants 18. Ford, Chevrolet and others were reviewed by Prof Younger, professor of in- dustrial engineering at Ohio State University, at a recent meeting of the Society of Automotive En gineers. Profesor Younger has made a study of these laws, especially AS they applied to Ford production, but they Cal be found working the plants of Chevrolet and other manufacturers who produce their automobile on an extensive cзle,

Here they are:

1. Concentration upon the man- ufacture of a single product.

2. Keeping each article dis- tinet.

3. Extensive use of conveyor nystems,

One Job Per Man.

These two views of processes in Ford manufacture are typical of mass production methods, in other factories as well. TRAFFIC SPEEDS.

CROSSINGS ON SEPA-

RATE GRADES.

"Fastest trame of any city in the world, is Chicago's (U.S.A.) claim. In the rush hours, on that city's Lake Shore Drive, 8 and 10 lines of motor vehicles scurry along at 45 m.p.h. and more.

This speed is maintained by a traffle lght ayatem a squad of motor-cycle police, who harry slow: drivers, and the absence of cross- lings at bottle-necks.

Grades have been separated at| congested crossing points by the provision of overhead traffe bridges, east and west, which leave the north-south trafic arteries wide open at crossinga.

Both machines have been placed at Cap-. Lain Campbell's, disposal by the South African agent for John 1. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd,
