A large number of foreigners along the line of chase witnessed part of the trnénky Rámong them being Dean Trivott, Llout. Denton, the latter being pearly shot, and sovoral foreiga Indled and children,
Of the actual 'robbery which, it appears, was committed by ond armed man at tlio junction of Szochten Road and Ningpo Road; little is known, several foreign children, two of them sons of n auperintendent and a chief detec tive inspector, being the only ones who had made a report of the murder.
The youths had been inspecting Alampa is a shop window, when one. of them, called the attention of the other to what was happening. They said that they inw'n man point bin pistol at the natiys, bank employes and attempt to wrest n blue cloth bag from him. The Intter resisted and struggled to foron his nasailant to loosen his grap on the bag, whereupon the robber, who had pointed his pistol nt the ollier's stomach fired once, the bullet penetrating a body. A second alat seems to have Konn qutray.
Probable Death from Shock.
The bank messenger, who had been employed by the Young Yui Bank, 60 Ningpo.. Road, for a number of years, and who, after being sent to the Bank of Chinn for 87,000, was returning to lis employers with this amount. The robber confronted him at the inter- section and shot him. On arrival nt the Lenter Hospital, physicians certified that he was dead, probably. front shock, inasmuch as the bullet wound in the allomen could not have caused instantaneous death
Alter the two shota the robber; holding the cloth bag, ran toward Nanking Rand. Near Jinkee Road, ho turned and fired, two shots in n northerly direction,, nine of which nearly struck n foreign, Indy pedestrian, A foreign gentleman SAW him insert the pistol m the aloove of his gown as he ran, again towards Nanking Rond.
The police constable who had been on point duty at the spot, gave chase, but in dared not fire because of the large crowd of pedestrians and vehicular traffic, the green light on Nanking Road having freed north and south
traffic.
As the robber neared Mossra. Whiteaway, Laidlaw and Co., Ltd., he went to the west side of the rond and made as if to enter the ulleyway-leading to Kiangao Rout, Before entering, however, he drew his pistol, and according to foreign witnesses, fire once into the air to intimidate those near at hand.
"A Helpful Blacksmith.
A Chinese blacksmith who had witnessed a part of the perform- ance, in the meanwhile, had hurried to to main thoroughfare and in- formed a C.P.( who was on traffic duty there. The constable went along Nanking Road; and had the robber pointed out to him. Tho miscreant hnd engaged a public riceba, and had driven off westerly.
The police, having been reinforc od, wore hot in pursuit of the ricsha which drow off toward the soutle
On arriving at Kiuklang Road, the ricahn was övertaken by two constables, who' had been withhald- ing their Aro, although they ran with drawn pistols. "One" of them approached from the left side, the other from the right, each grasping A wrist. The robber had agnin takon his pistol from the sleeve, and as the polico seized him ho fired several shots at random. ・・・
