MANAGEMENT REMISS.

Highly important recommendations to the Government, calling for new legislation and closer supervision of fire escapes, were contained in the verdict submitted this morning of the Coroner's Jury which has been sitting on the inquiry into the King Edward Hotel fire disaster.

The jury found that there was no evidence that the fire was due to arson, and, while not satisfied that the blaze started through defective wiring, recommended that the electric equipment of all old buildings used as hotels or big

They regarded the hotel management as seriously remiss in keeping the basement gate (the only fire exit in the hotel)

The loss of life was due, it is held, principally to the inadequacy of the external emergency or fire stairs. In this connexion, the jury recalls, the recommendations made by a Committee in 1926, especially in regard to the compulsory provision of fire escapes. They deplore the fact that the Government did not give effect to these recommendations, and are strongly of the opinion that the report of this Committee should receive the immediate and effective attention of the Government.
