The bomb, which had been hidden behind a large wooden screen near the platform of the lecture theatre, was exploded by a student pressing the button of an electrical apparatus.
A small window was broken and part of the panelling of the screen was blown out.
The theatre, which was packed with hundreds of men and women students,
filled with sul- WHA phurous smoke and anwdust dia- charged from the bomb.
As soon as the bomb exploded Mr. Murphy rushed from the theatre pursued by the greater part of the audience, many women; taking part in the chase.
"Catch
There were cries of him," but when the pursueta, after rushing through amoke-Inden corridors, reached the quadrangle, Mr. Murphy had disappeared. '
Fireworks Let Off.
Lively scenes preceded the explosion of the bomb. Mr. Murphy, who was to lecture on the rationalisation of industry, in place of Mr. Harry Pollitt, who was unable to attend, found the words, "The People's Flax is Deepest Red, White and Blue" chalked on a large blackboard,
Mr. Murphy wiped out the worda "White and Blue." "The "rag" then began. Paper streamers of all colours were thrown by men and girl students, the lids of desks were banged, and a "band" made a discordant noise with rattles, cardboard. saxophones and whistles. Fireworks were also discharged from the back of the theatre.
