With a view to rendering the Berlin Season of 1929 particularly attractive to the international public and at the same time meet- ing a long cherished but no far unfulfilled wish of the inhabitants of Berlin; the services of Arture Toacanini, whom many regard as the greatest conductor of our times, have been secured for a series of five or six performances hy the opera company from the Scala, Milan, which will take place: between the 22nd and 31st May.

Toscanini will bring the whole of

the soloists from the Scala with him and also the orchestra which numbers 110 executants, the powerful chorus and part of the famous corps de ballet.. It is not yet quite certain what works will. be given but the following operas by Verdi have been mentioned: "Rigoletto," "Il Trovatore," "La Forza del Destino" and "Falstaf" Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammer- moor" and Puccini's "Manon" are! also being considered and the new opera "Monaco Geraldo" by Pizetti will perhaps be put on. Particu lar interest attaches to the fact that the Milan Scala are sending their entire scenery and effects to Berlin.

The three Berlin Opera houses will give a Wagnor Cycle, a Mozart Cyclo and a Strauss Cycle, all with fresh scenery. Richard, Strauss, whom we consider to be Germany's most representative mualeian, will conduct the Strauss Cycle in person. In addition to Richard Strauss the Berlin Direc- tora General of Music, Leo Blech, Erich Kleiber, Otto Klemperer and Brunno Walter will also take part in carrying out the programine which is conceived on a really large scale. The festival perform- ances of opera will be opened on the 19th May with "Die Meister- singer" which has long been pre- ferred for opening nights. A first performance is also to be included) in the programme, the work aclec- ted for production at the begin- ning of June being the comic opera "Nouca vom Tage" (News of the Day) by Paul Hindemith, one of the most gifted of the younger German composers, who has attracted attention with his opera "Cardillac." Towards the end of the Season "Carnival In Rome" by Johann Strauss will be. rovived. This is an carly work of the Austrian composer, written before the operetta "Die Fleder-
