SHANGHAI CASES AGAIN

- ADJOURNED.

Court are still on strike against the The Judges of the Provisional

Deputies and when Judge Kuh and Mr. Van den Berg appeared to gether on Saturday morning, March 28, as usual, the Judge im- mediately remanded all the casos down for hearing.

A heated argument in the Judges' chambera had previously taken place between Judge Hou 6 and Judge Kuh and Mr. Van den Borg, Dutch Vice-Consul and Senior Consul's Deputy, after which Mr. Van den Berg took his seat on the bonch with Judge Kuh, as usual.

2

Court Inapr. Eva at the outset stated that there were several

3 casos due for judgment and Mr.: Van den Berg aaked Judge Kuh of what he proposed doing, where- upon the latter replied that all 2 cases in which the Senior Consul's Deputy was concerned would-be remanded. Indeed, all the Chinese charge sheets had thus bean mark- od before the Court sat.

0

Judge Kuh then made the follow- ing announcemont:

"Owing to the fact that no reply has yet been received to the threa demands presented to the Senior Consul by the Commissioner of Foreign Affairs in connexion with 2 our negotiations, I am again adjourning all cases in which the Sonlor Consul's Deputy Is concern ed pending a reply. I am sitting to-day in accordanco with instruc- tlons from the President of this Court."

1

In reply to Court Inapr. Eva'a 2 query, Judge Kuh said that all important cases must be referred to the No. 2 Court.

Mr.. Van den Berg then left the court-room.

A formal protest was lodged by the Deputy on Saturday afternoon, the wording of which renda:

"I formally protest against the 1 continuous orders of the Judge to @remand for no apparent reason of law whatsoever, cases put before him and the Deputy, and against Ils refusal to try them.

"In all civilized countries the public la considered to have an and impartial administration of Inalienable right to the prompt justice.

A Personal Grudge,

"It has been asserted time and again that the administration of justice in China has been brought into line with western ideas and principles, and it would seem to the outer world that the Chinese public has good reason to believe that it has that sama inalienable right. However, on three occasions, this week, Chinese citizens have been deprived of that right, for no other reason but a porsonal grudge,

The first on the programme was the Blake Shield, in which 20 team's manufactured by the Presiding took part, the winners being the Judges of the Criminal and Civil Mounted Infantry, with 280 points, the Courts of Appeal, against one of Corpa Signals being accond with 271 points, and the "A" Team of No. & the Senior Consul's Deputies.
