OVERHEATING.
Few Useful Hints.
Hot weather may not be the on- ly cause for overheating of the motor. In fact, if the engine and all ita accessories are in good con- dition; if the radiator is full of water, and the motorist is driving property, there should be no cause for overheating of the motorno, matter how hot the weather. -
Of course, the hotter It la, the more frequent la the necessity of refilling the radiator-but so long as the cooling system is kept fully supplied with fresh water there should be no trouble,
When overheating occurs, thoru- fore, look rather to the motor-and the motorist-than the weather.
Overheating may result from one or more of the following causes:
1. Lack of water supply.

3. Worn hose connexions.
4. Rust or lime deposits on jacket walls or radiator tubes..
5. Carbon in the cylinders. This causes detonation, and detona- tion causes overheating.
6. Racing the engine in Jow goar, or driving too far in low.
7. Retarding the spark too far.
8. Poor ignition, causing inla- firing of the engine.
9.
Poor valve timing, especially
on the exhaust side.
10. Too rich a mixture,
11. Lack of oil or poor oll, caus-
ing friction between pistons and
cylinder walls.
IT'S AN ILL WIND-
12. Clogged muffler, caused by motorist to stop and refill his ra- heavy mixture or too much oil,
13. Loose, and allpping fan belt. 14. Pump not working properly. 16. Brakes dragging, causing the engino to pull harder.
16. Bearings too tight. 17. Radiator clogged with mud or dirt, or an obstruction in front, preventing passage of air.

It should also be remembered that oil is used up more quickly on long steady runs than in city driving. The oll should be replen-) lahed more often, therefore,
'Lack of oil, it has been noted, la one of the causes of overheating. Therefore both oll and water Most of these causes can be pre-should be kept at a steady level. vented. Many can be cured by the driver himself. ·
It may be noted, also, that much At times, however, the only way depends on the driver and his to prevent overheating is to carry way of handling the wheel and an extra supply of water. This throttle, in keeping the engine from may occur on a long mountainous overheating. Use of low gear, the trip, or one across the hot deserts spark lover and the brakes depend of the west. At the most of these much on the motorist, and mis- places there are convenient water handling of those will cause aver holcs, where it is advisable for the heating of the engine.
