TRAGIC AFFAIR.
MARINE SHOOTS HIMSELF UN
H.M.S. HERMES,
CONSIGNEES' NOTICES.
THE BEN LINE STEAMERS, LIMITED.
From DUNKIRK, LONDON &
STRAITS. The Steamship, on
A tragic."affair occurred board H.MS. Hormes on Saturday
afternoon, when Marine William H. MacDonald, it is stated, com- mitted suicide by shooting himself through the heart. The circum- stances surrounding the man's death will, we understand, form the subject of an inquiry; which will not be of a public nature.
According to what a Press representative was able to learn, the late Marine MacDonald, who was unmarried, kopt very much to himself and did not associate with his colleagues. He came East with H.MS. Hermes dome 15 months ago and, we understand, went ashore only once, at Shang- haf. Since being stationed Hongkong he had never been ashore of his own free will, and had only left the ship when ro- quired to do so in order to carry out his duties.' 'It' la stated that he had been under observation for some time.
at
MacDonald Was on watch on Saturday afternoon. He was re- lleved about four o'clock, after which it appears that he went be- low and shot himself through the heart with a ride.
Marine MacDonald's untimely demise came as a great shock to the men serving on the Hermes, and great sympathy was shown at the funeral, which took place in the Protestant Cemetery yester- day, when full naval honours were accorded.
The cortege left the hospital at five o'clock and proceeded to the cemetery via the Monument. The procession was headed by a firing party composed of marines from. MS. Ilermes, after which came the coffin, draped with the Union Jack, borne on a gun carriage drawn by marines from H.M Suffolk. Following this came naval officer, Including Comman "der R. Ramsbotham, Lieut. Com- mander Cannidge and Lieut. Walker. Then, followed a mourn- ing party and finally Petty Officers, Marines, saflors and Air Force sympathisers.
At the graveside the burial ser- vice was conducted by the Rev. T. A. Giles, of H.M.S. Hermes. This concluded, three volleys were fred over the grave, and a marine bugler sounded the Commodore'a anlute, after which the bugle party aounded the "Last Post.”
Wroaths were sent by the War- rant Officers' Mess: Wardroom Officer; Headquarters Flight, H. M. S. Hermes; and from comrades.
