WHY HOTEL COMPANY ENTERED TRANSPORT FIELD.

HAD NO ALTERNATIVE.

A non-controversial reply to recent criticisms of the Hong- kong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd., for inaugurating a motor-bus service on the Queen's Road route, was made by Mr. J. Scott Hurston when presiding at the Company's annual meeting held to-day. It will be recalled that at the recent meeting of the Hongkong Tramways, Ltd., the Hotel Company was accused of competition in this connexion.

"

Mr. Scott Harston's statement was in the nature of an ex- planation of the inception and growth of the Company's bus and car services. He dwelt with the opening of the Repulse Bay Hotel and the motor road round the island, necessitating trans- port facilities between the city and the south side of the island, and stated that although local firms were approached and offered subsidies for loss on working over a reasonable period, no sup port was forthcoming. This compelled the Hotel Company to Inaugurate its own bus and car services.

It was also explained that the Company made several ap- plications to the Government to run buses from Kennedy Town to Happy Valley via Queen's Road, two in 1928 and one in 1925, before the concession was granted in 1927.

A further interesting statement made by the Chairman was that the Company appears to have weathered the difficulties of the past four years and is now, in a strong position, with the reault that there are hopes of it reverting to a dividend-distri- buting basis in the near future.
