New Testing Device.

The speed and rush in the Imanufacture of automobiles render

it no longer possible to put oach individual car through a trial run of hundreds and thousands of kilometers. It is therefore un- avoidable that new cars come on the market without having been previously tried and that the, buyer has to carry out this important task himself. In cases where trial runs are, notwithstanding, carried out before sale, they cost too much time and money if carried out on the open road,,

In order to remove this de- ficiency, felt by the automobile maunfacturers, of all countrica, the idea of the "rolling road" was adopted. It was shown in action for the first time during the recent visit of the. German press in Bochum, Westfalia, and aroused the greatest interest.

The rolling road is of romark- able simple construction. Fun- damentally it consists of only two drums, on which the rear wheels of the car to be tested run. The revolving rear wheels rotate the drums, while the car is so anchor-:| ed that its rear..wheels cannot leave the drums. The rond on which the driving wheels run is thus nothing else but the per- ipheries of the drums. A record- ing dynamo is connected with the drums, and from the number of revolutions of the dynamo the speed per hour of the ear is direct- ly determined.

Provision is made for introduc- ing resistances and thus the be- haviour of the car can be tested in overcoming greater or less gra- diots. The carburetor la con. nected by a special gasoline tube with the measuring tanks in the testing room. The consumption of gasoline under the most varied werking conditions enn be aseer tained from these measuring 'danke.",
