Lady Clementi's Absence.
I feel only one regret at this moment the absence of Lady Cle- menti. I remember very well when sho was at Macao how enthusias tle she was at seeing, for the first time, the merry Portuguese dances, Sir Cecil, we thank you most sincerely for this proof of friend- ship. I ask Your Excellency, to kindly let Lady Clementi know how much we all feel her absence, knowing that she is so far away, and unable to participate with us in our joy.
Now let me say a few words about dances and songs, which I hope all of you may some day esc danced amidst the picturesque beauty of their native environment with, for their background, our rugged, lofty hills, our rich vine yards and orchards, the bright blue of our sunny skies, and, in short, with all the exuberance of the lovely land which I am for- tunate enough to be able to say gave me birth.-(Applause),
We have tried to find some pro- per scenery which might, carry you there! Only a poor Idea havo we succeeded in conveying to this hall to-day. For these dances are.. only lovely in the country fields; in the open air and in the bright moonlight. But one's imagina- tion can supply much.
