Nowhere has winter grain beon sown, hence thero will be no spring harvest.

In one haien, 70,000 out of a population of 120,000 were com- pletely destitute of food, and its substitutes. The remainder of the people got very little.

The local gentry are doing their

best with gruel kitchens, but this is merely a drop in the bucket. The same applies to the amount of grain the Government has so far sent to this area.

At Sanyuan, Mr. Oliver found a mob of several thousand, madden ed by hunger, threatening to loot the city unless fed. The people everywhere were desperate. In ene halen a hundred families had season--committed suicide rather than

Kowloon's Lack of Support.

The successful competitors ro- erived their prizes from the hands of Mrs. W. T. Southorn.

Prior to the distribution Mr. Ho Leung, as President of the Society, fonid he supposed they might con- gratulate themselves on having staged another fine show. It was most gratifying to see a greater number of exhibitors from The Perk.

He would say, however, that he was disappointed by the poor sup; port from the Lower Levels and Kowloon. There must be, he said, al lenat 200 or 300 gardena at Kowloon Tong and Hamuntin and It was a great pity that they had not received support from that quarter.

He appealed to the residents of Kowloon to take a greater in- terest in the show next year, and, atated that perhaps the Society would arrange suitable transpor.. tation in future.

Court before the Registrar. Mr. A. J. Martin, sitting as coroner. After the evidence of six witnesses was taken the Coroner returned verdiet that "Ronald Francis Ball died on February 6, 1929, from a bullet wound inflicted by himself while temporarily insane."

Evidence was given by Dr. F. B. Baldwin, who said that he had been called to the Y.M.C.A. on the morning in question and had found deceased lying on his back on the bed in his room and had sent him to hospital, where he handed him over to Dr. A. D.

Wall.

Mr. C. M. Tobin, resident

secretary in the Foreign Y.M.C.. told the coroner that about 9 am. on February G the No. 1 boy from the sixth floor had called him and that he had gone to room 004, occupied by the deceased, and had found the deceased lying on his back on the bed with a pistol oy his left chest. There was a bullet wound through the temples from which came a trickle of blood. The deceased was still alive and hold a half burnt cigarette in his hand,

which showed that he had only recently been shot. The wound was so obviously a fatal one that the witness had not tried to do anything for the deceased, but had sent for the police and the doctor. He knew nothing of the deceased's habita, and identified a revolver produced in court as similar to the one he saw lying on the deceased's chest.

A Potential Suicide.

Dr. A. D. Wall, medical practi- tioner, said that he had seen the deceased on the day in question, when he was brought to the
