Their work la well known to the masters of vessels on the Delta and others, for on numerous occasions the Inunches liave gone to the as- sistance of shipping and rendered valuable help. From these may be selected the occasion when, during the troublous period of 1925, the Wing Lee was proceeding up river when she sighted a huddled crowd of villagers on the river bank, the neighbouring village being in flames,
Bandits Dislodged.
Closing in, the Wing Lee learn- ed from the villagers that bandits had made an attack and were then looting the village. The Wing Lec "browned", the village with appar- ently good effect, the bandita" re- treating inland to the sliciter of a wood where the Wing Lee's ma- chine-guns could not reach them, the launch, in the excitement of the moment, having unfortun ately run aground.
However, the Dom Joan then ar- rived on the scene, and having been lately fitted with a three-pounder, was able to shell the wood and dis- lodge the bandits.
In spite of the prevalling anti- British feeling, both launches re ceived quito an ovation from the local populace on their return to harbour.
Towards the end of 1927, a motor lighter bound up river reported to H.M.S. Faulknor that she had been threatened with a piratical attack. An armed guard of three was put on board with instructions to keep out of sight, and the Faulknor fof- lowed up about three or four miles out of astern, also keeping well sight. Sure enough, while round- ing the bend into Junction Chan- el, the lighter was attacked, pirates putting off from the shore were met and uncomfortably sur in sampane to capture her. They
