t.
The Chief Justice: Then in it possible for two notes to bear the same number?
The witness: I have only known one instance of that to occur in the course of putting into circulation something he two million notes. Every one has passed through my hands or
under my control, and there was only one instance, ie, two notos bore one number and one number was missing.
The Chief Justice: Whose mis- take was that?
The witness explained that the attention of the printers in London was drawn to the matter and they accounted for it by saying that the numbering machine must have missed one turn in its automatic operation.
In reply to Mr. D'Almada, the witness Haid that as regards the forged notes which he had not been able to match by a genuine note, the respective genuine notes (14) were still in circulation.
Mr. D'Almada: They could not possibly be among the forty alleged forgeries 7--No,
Mr. D'Almada: Can you tell me when the Bank. first detected the forgeries?

The witness: I was deceived by the first note that came into my pos- Bession: I authorised it to be paid, In re-examination, the witness produced the eleven forgerles found in the Bank. With regard to his passing a forgery bearing a repre- sentation of his own signature, the witness explained that the Hong- kong office had received three for geries from Canton, all signed "Clerk," and they were only watch- ing for notes bearing that name. When he looked at the note again he detected the difference.
The Chief Justice: The horse was out of the stable then.

Mr. Fitzroy: The nole specially referred to you?
Witness Says He Was Careless.
The witness; Yes; it was care- lessness on my part: I should have looked at it more carefully. Per- sonally, I take very little notice of signatures in regard to notes. When 500 are signed in three quarters of an hour a lot of differences can creep in to the signatures.
Mr. Fitzroy: Did you then say that the signature was not yours, because you had examined the signa ture carefully and had come to that conclusion, or because you found that the note itself was a forgery?
The witness; I discovered that the note was a forgery first, and then I found that my algnature was a forgery.
Mr. Fitzroy; Apart from the fact that you found the note to bo a forgery, would you have been convinced that it was 'a genuine aignature?
Witness; As I say, I accepted. tho note: I did not examine it. It was brought to me and I said, That's all right, it is signed by me."
In reply to the Chief Justice, the witness and that only by inspection of the signature under a glass was he able to say that it was not his.
