THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

"NEW LÉGISLATIVE

COUNCILLOR.

HÒN. ME. TRAGAS RECEIVES CONGRATULATIONS."

AT CLUB LUSITANO.

A reception attended by a large kathering of members of the Portuguese community in Hong kong was held at the Club Lusitano Inst evening when the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga was the recipient of a silver rose bowl presented to him by his compatriots In the Colony, in commemoration of his appoint- ment as representative for Kow- loon to the Legislative Council,

The idea of the presentation originated with the Committee of "the Club Lusitano, and was cordially supported by the Ulub do Recrolo,. the Associacao de Socorros Mutuos and Portuguese friends of Mr. Braga.

That the appointment is also very favourably received by the residents of Macno is testified to by numerous telegrams of congra- tulations received by the President of the Club Committee which were read in the course of the proceed- inga.

Why

An agreeable surpriso sprung on Mr. Braga when an old friend, Mr. Pedro Sequeira, turned up at the Club before the function commenced, with an orchestra composed of Mr. Sequeira's aix aons, and discoursed selections of delightful music.

The Club hall was filled with a 'large number of ladies and gentle- 'men' representing every section of the community. The chiefs of the various Portuguese institutions and their ladies were present," and included Mr. C. A. da Roza, J. P., (President of the Club. Lusitano and Chairman of the Reception Committee) and Mrs, 'da Roza, Mr. J. M. da Rocha (President of the Club de Recreio) and Mra, da Rocha, and Mr. Frank Barnes (President of the Associacao de Spcorros Mutuos) and Mrs. Barnes, Senhor A. Cerveira de Albuquerque e Castro (Consul-General for Por tugal), Mme, and Mlle. Albuquer- que were also among those pre- Rent. In a letter received from the Rt. Rev. J. da Costa Nunes (Blahop of Macao) he expressed his regret at not being able to attend, but sent his cordial wishes and con- gratulations. Bishop Valtorta, being indisposed, could not be pre- Bent. His Lordship wrote wishing the Hon. Mr. Braga all success in his new sphere of activities,

Regret was generally felt at the absence of M23. Braga, who is ill with influenza, and of Miss Mary Braga who is also indisposed. All other members of Mr. Braga's large family participated as guests of their community at the function, They were, the Misses Jean, Maud and Carolina Braga, and Messrs. J. M. Braga, Clement Braga, Noel Braga, Hugh Braga, John Braga, A. M. Braga and Paul Braga. Mr. James Braga is not in the Colony but at Foochow, in the employ or the Standard Oil Co., of New York.

Club Lusitano'a Address. The proceedings commenced with an address by Mr. C. A. da Roza, who said:

Ladies and gentlemen, waare all called upon some time or other to discharge a duty, sometimes the 'duty is performed reluctantly.

They say of the race we belong to, ladies and gentlemen, that we are prone to réçall our past deeds, Our critics have said of us that we live in the past, but unfor tuuate are the people who have not a.past worthy of recall, a past with which to spur those of a later generation to honourable deeds, if not deeds of achievement,

The Portuguese in Hongkong have had a varied fortune from the time they came to this island to scek a livelihood amongst their friends the British-they have founded their families here and in a couple of generations their descendants have come to regard Hongkong as their home. Such a person is Mr. Braga, our honoured guest to-day.
