According to yesterday afternoon, The, `pri- Father Byrne, the principal re- presentative of the Order in Hong kong, the scheme has matured to a stage when actual building plants can be discussed, and there are being prepared by the architects.
A alte has been found in Aberdeen for the new institution, the estimated cost of which will be something like two lakhs. The building will represent a depar ture, architecturally, for it will be designed to embody the most beautiful ideas in Chinese archis tecture.
It is now some years since Father Byrne arrived in Hongkong and being reminded that the original object of the visit was not the building of a theological college, but of a secular educa- tional institution Father Byrne smiled, and said he was sent here to carry out only the instruction of the authorities of his Order.

establish here in Hongkong a large Seminary, or Theological College, for the training of Chi- nese priests for the south of China. The Jesuit Fathers were asked to be responsible for its.pólice. building and to take charge of the Seminary when it was built."
Those two works-the Univer- sity Hostel and the Seminary would absorb all the men that the Society could spare for some years to come, stated Father Byrne. Both were big schemes, for while the one was asociated with the foremost educational institution In the Colony, the other aimed'nt the establishment of an institütion: which was much bigger in its scope than a secondary school, because the studies were to be of a higher grade.

The Mussen. "That may be as you say, but it will reach only a small number of people desirous of taking up the priesthood. We still have the mass of the population of China, uncared for," observed our reprc
sentative.
In reply, Father Byrne said that they were not to gauge the results of such work by the small number persons that the work reached directly. Perhaps the results will ultimately reach a very large number of those others with whom they came into contact. As a parallel, Father Byrne spoke of the scientists engaged in research work, whose numbers were few, but whose speciallantion in such zubjects as malaria ultimately benefitted the community at large. Similarly, Jesus Christ, when he atarted out on his life-work, had only twelve apostles.. The number of his followers were now legion.
Father Byrne said that the new Theological College, when con- pleted, will aim at a higher grade than the ordinary secondary school, 18 it will include philosophy, theology, and other subiccta not available, at the lower schools, and it will also be regional in its scope, as it will take in students from the various vicariates in South China.
Mr. D'Almada, before calling the prisoner to tell his story from the witness box, said it would be necessary, under the Ordinance, for the Crown to prove that the prisoner was in possession of the notes knowingly and wilfully It was not sufficient, to say that because the nolea were found un- der the mattress of his bed, they belonged to him.

The Defendant's Story. Giving evidence, the defendant said that for the last two years he had been working for the polico. In this Connexion he re- called the Saltch case of two years ago...when Salleh, who was a clerk in the Naval Yard, was charged with attempting to sell explosives and was sentenced at the Central Magistracy to nine! months' imprisonment. Prisoner further said that he had laid much valuable information, with the police with regard to arms, muni- tions and oplum dealz.'
Dealing with the discovery of the two rounds of ammunition in his room, prisoner stated that they were given to him by an In- dian Naval Yard clerk before he (prisoner) was arrested. In that connexion the clerk had told him to find someone to buy the am- munition, explaining that he could supply any quantity.
In this regard prisoner said he told Mr. C. C. Perdue, A.S.P., about the matter. Prisoner was referred to Detective Inspector Lane, who advised him to get fa formation about revolver ummiuni- tion and wireless parts and not to bother about bullets for use in rifles. Prisoner atated that he was told to keep the two rounds, which he took with him,

But Inspector Lane is prepared to go into the witness box and say that you have never done so?
I am sure I did.
Juror's Suggestion,
At the request of Mr. Key, one of the jurors, his Lordship put the following question to the prison- er: Why did you not say to In- spector Lane that night.-I um a good friend of the police. These people have double-crossed me. I will now take you to see their ammunition store in Yanmati?
His Lordship commented that the prisoner's answer was very satisfactory.

Mr. Key then suggested that the hotel room boy be recalled certain points. If it could bo prov- ed that the prisoner never left the hotel at all, the main part of his story, the alleged arms deal at Yaumati, would fall to the ground.
The room boy, recalled said he was certain the prisoner never left the hotel. The prisoner could use chopsticks, and had his mealu at the boarding house. (Prisoner had stated that he went out to meals).
In answer to defending counsel, witness said that he had to watch guests closely when they arrived without any luggage. Room boys invariably looked into vacated rooms to make sure that nothing was missing. Another why witness paid special atten- tion to the prisoner was because he was a foreigner, their desiro therefore being to satisfy him.. The hearing was adjourned.
